I own a fair number of CDs and I have for a few years now connected an old player to my Expert pro 140 using the spdif output and until now I was quite satisfied with it. Now I am wondering if a higher quality transport would actually make a difference or if the high quality of the Devialet dac would flatten these differences. In that case it would not be worth spending money on an upgrade. Do you have any experience on that?

Yes, it makes a difference. I tried an older Theta Digital first which was fantastic, I owned an Accuphase DP-75V, a C.E.C TX-51 and an MSB Universal Media Transport. They all sounded excellent. At the same time, non of the above sounded as good as my "streaming kit" that I have now, so I sold all transports and all CDs (after ripping the content, of course).

I have switched from a NAD Silver Line S500 CD Player to a Project CD Box RS with power box RS uni. Both connected via AES to my Expert 250.
Between this switch I had tried Audirvana on a M1 Macbook Air with ripped CDs (Exact Audio Copy) connected via USB.
For me the sound quality with the same CDs was better with the NAD than with Audirvana. And the CD Box is much better than the NAD.
Maybe a DDC would could change this ranking.
