Does SAM and Martin Logan make sense? - Hyperhenry - 26-Jun-2014

Folks
I am running the Dev 170/200 with ML Ethos Speakers for nearly a year now and have spent a lot of time and effort to optimize it with cables (LS, Power, Digital etc.) and I think it is really a fascinating combination - far from whatever I have owned in the past 20 yrs (and this was decent high end stuff as well). However sometimes - depending on the recording - it can be a bit too direct and particularly with voices or strings a bit harsh.
What I find a bit astonishing is the fact that obviously many ML Owners have voted for SAM. To my underswtanding (I am not a technical expert) so far SAM only influences the bass, which in most MLs is active - meaning controlled by the speaker. So have I missed something - could SAM improve the MLs as well? Looking forward to comments and opinions.

I am not familiar with how the ML signal is split, but I would imagine the active bass unit gets its signal from the speaker connection with the Devialet so there is no reason why SAM could not be applied.

So, I have the answer directly from the SAM specialist from Devialet.

To be efficient, the signal amplified should come from the ADH circuit.

So, for passive Martin Logan, there is no problem for SAM. And they are looking for a pair to test SAM on ML.

But for Martin Logan with active bass unit, as Montis for example (sorry Matt !), SAM could not be applied...

Thanks for clearing this up Steph!

Thanks for that.

The view from Devialet is what I expected, i.e. SAM would have no (or very little) benefit with the ML hybrids. I've discussed this with Frank a couple of times, and he and I disagree, though I'm happy to admit I may be wrong. Now the SAM effect on the ML CLX or the new Neolith model -- that would be very interesting!

The Montis are very fine speakers, and I've not heard anything better for the price. The general view seems to be that the integration of the 'static panel with the sub is the best of any ML speaker to date, and that's saying something, as ML have been the leaders in this field for years.

The combination of Montis and Devialet is quite remarkable -- assuming your goal is transparency. Some day I'll get round to inviting people over for a listen. We're likely to be moving house this summer, so it'll have to wait.

Cheers to all,

Matt

Hi Matt

This is very encouraging as I am considering the Montis for D400.

Currently I'm enjoying ML Electromotion ESL with D200 and I think the Montis on D400 should be a very nice upgrade. Especially I'm hoping that this will downplay what I sometimes feel as harsh presentation of the high frequencies with some recordings specially rock / hard rock / heavy metal.

Any thoughts?
