Multi-room mono spotify streaming? - battlefork - 07-Sep-2016

Hi all,

I'm considering getting a second Silver phantom (already own 1 phantom + a dialog). While I was browsing the forum, I came across a setup that uses 2 Chromecast audio to stream Spotify to two phantoms simultaneously.

Are the chromecasts necessary? Can I do this with just the dialog?

Thanks!

You can indeed do it with Dialog using the Spark software to setup your Phantom multi-room system. In Spark you merge the different rooms using drag&drop. Then with Spotify connect you can select in the Spotify app (on PC or mobile device) to stream to the merged rooms. You can control the volume from the app or in Spark. However, in the Spotify app and also in Spark on mobile devices you cannot adjust the volume individually for each of the merged rooms, only all together. The only possibility to control individually the volumes of merged rooms is in the Spark app installed on a PC or Mac. Whne the rooms are not merged you can adjust the volume individually for each of the rooms, but also the music you play is played individually. I'm not aware that you can stream from Spotify to several rooms at the same time when the rooms are not merged. And I do not know what you can do with multiple Chromecast audio with that respect. I assume you need to manage multiple chromecasts in the chromecast app and cannot do this directly in the Spotify app or any other app with Chromecast capability. So you might end up with the same issues as with Spark and Dialog. In conclusion: Since the Dialog and Phantoms have Spotify connect I'm not anymore using my Chromecast audio as it is redundent. Spotify connect works really well and autodetected by the Phantoms. So you do not need to bother with any other app for listening to Spotify. Unfortunately Spotify has a little bit loss in quality compared to Qobuz that streams lossless music, else it would be my first choice.

Thanks for the detailed answer Streamy! I already bought the chromecast audios before seeing your reply, but it's not entirely a waste of money. I will multiroom stream to a phantom and a B&W Zeppelin Air in the meantime (hopefully the latency isn't too bad).

Turns out it doesn't really work because the latency is quite noticeable.
