Understanding Loudspeaker Coupling/Decoupling white paper
#1
Here's a paper by Gary Koh of Genesis. It lays out pretty thoughtfully the issues with respect to speaker coupling/decoupling and how various approaches address them:

This doesn't cover all bases but it does cover all the "traditional" theories about how and why to couple speakers to stands and floors and a bit about ball decoupling (which decouple in 3 of the 6 degrees of freedom) and lossy polymers which work in a narrow range which may or may not help.

There is a lot more to it than hifi manufacturers, magazines and dealers are aware of.
