Simon's system
#11
Very nice system and setup Simon!

If I may make one suggestion; I think it's good to get those beautifyl Tyr's (nice to see another D owner using these as well Smile) from the ground however it looks like you've used the material to isolate central heating piping with. While creative I think it would be better not to use a material that can collect static electricity as well as plastics can and to minimize contact with the cables (to not, in effect, add additional unnecessary di-electric material). In a DIY setting paper or wood would be better.

Noticed one more thing, your speaker wires are possibly not connected correctly. One speaker seems to be connected out of phase. Did you also wire red and black in opposite for one speaker on the speaker side?

Hello blorbed,

Thank for your comment.
I did not try XT-2 before I decided to buy X2. So I cannot share any thoughts about sonic differences.

Thanks for your suggestion. I connected one of the speaker cables the "wrong" way on both sides (amp and speaker). So my speakers are connected in phase. (By doing so I avoided a lot of bending the speaker cable).

I see you own Aurender N10. Very nice!
When I bought my X100L I was told the USB input of Devialet was inferior to AES/EBU. Did you ever compare these two connections with your Aurender?

Hello Antoine,

Thanks for your comment and suggestions!

I indeed connected one of the speaker cables the "wrong" way on both sides (amp and speaker). By doing so I avoided a lot of bending the speaker cable. So my speakers are connected in phase.

After enjoying my Devialet-based system for some time the upgrade-virus arrived in december and I started tuning.

So far the changes I made are:

1. Replaced my Rel subwoofer with Velodyne
In my listening room there are some nasty resonances in the lower frequencies.
In my former system I could filter the these frequencies with the roomcorrection software that comes standard in the Linn Klimax.
After replacing the Linn by Aurender the feature of roomcorrection was gone.
Velodyne has built-in roomcorrection that is very effective. Velodyne made this option very user-friendly to apply. After some experimenting with cut-off frequencies of the sub and D200 I 'm happy with the integration of my D200 and sub. The Velodyne is connected to D200 (both left and wright channe) with QED subwoofer cables.

2. Resonance control
  • D200 and Aurender are on spikes.
  • Cable lifters.

3. Power cables
Furutech TCS21.
I replaced standard mains cable of the Velodyne with Furutech TCS21. This was a big improvement. The sound of the subwoofer became a lot deeper, more controlled and detailed. A significant improvement.

Shunyata Alpha digital.
With Ansuz and Nordost Cables throughout my system I like the detailed sound a lot. The downside of it is that in some recordings the sound can be too bright. To reduce this brightness I replaced Ansuz mainz power cable to Aurender with Shunyata Alpha digital. The change effectively reduced the brightness.

4. Power distribution block
The new powerdistribution block was custom-made out of 3 mm aluminium.
Components inside:
  • IEC-inlet: Furutech NCS;
  • Schuko outlets: Furutech E30 (G);
  • Internal wiring: Mundorf teflon coated silver-gold wire.
As many of you posted on this forum powercords can make a big difference. I can only state from experience that is does. Also the distribution block made a big difference. All the changes together made the sound better, more balanced, more detailed, deeper bas, better soundstage, .... .
