250 with Sub and headphones?
#1
I'm running out of connections with my 250. I have the Atohm GTSE1 speakers and I'd like to try the matching v38s sub rather than SAM to get a bit more low end since moving to a flat with a larger high ceiling lounge (the bottom end has got lost and SAM seems to make no difference). I don't want to change the Atohms, as they are otherwise great and I don't want big floor standers in the room (or shell out ££).

Config is
Phono- Rega P3
Line 1 - CD Rega Planet
Digital - Headphone amp line out
Ethernet - Air3 Mac Mini

Is there a way to run the sub out and headphones????
Thanks
Brendan

simple answer: no. Only if you add a slave. If you connect headphones to the pre out you will switch off the speakers if you activate the pre-out. Therefore also an external switch will not help.
The only way would be a sub that can be connected to the speaker terminals. Or bigger speakers...

I've just got back my upgraded 250Pro, and in a few weeks will get back the 2nd 250Pro to make up a 1000Pro set-up.

May sound dumb question, but how do you set up for both Sub output and also headphone. I'm using the stereo output to my Sub, and would like to try the 2nd stereo outputs from my 2nd 250Pro (when I get it back from upgrading). With the pair of D-Premiers could only use stereo output from the Master (Slave didn't give any stereo output option).

Is it as simple as setting the outputs in configurator for both 250Pro Master & Companion, e.g. Master stereo output for Sub, and Companion Stereo Output for a pair of Headphones. Not sure how to do that in below Configurator

If as simple as above, would I then just need to buy an 2 x RCA Stereo output connection cable to a single 3.5 female jack connection cable for my Headphones (a pair of Ultrasone Edition 8's). If yes, do you know where to get a half decent cable connections (I can only find a cheap 2xRCA to 3.5mm Jack cable combo).

In this case you cannot connect the sub via stereo cable. You can use the Pre-out of the slave for the headphone and the mono sub on the master for the sub. There are splitter cables available if the sub does not support a mono connection. But most subs have this as most homecinema receivers only have a mono sub out.

Like the below Config?

Is there any disadvantage going Mono Sub Output compared to Stereo Sub Output?

I would say No, if cut of frequency is 80Hz or below.

Run sub as "Pre-amplified output mono" and buy a decent headphone DAC (Chord Hugo?), then connect it to "Digital Output (SPDIF). Despite of added cost for DAC/headphone amp I think you will benefit from headphone's sound quality improvement.

I have my own question to one more knowledgable, though. Is it possible to connect DAC/headphone amp to Devialet's USB?  Would USB work as output? I know it is possible to use it as such, when digitalizing vinyls, but will it work as "USB output" continuously when other inputs are selected?

Nope, that's not possible. While the USB port in the Devialet support bi-directional audio it needs a device running as a host/in host mode (like a computer) to send audio data to it. All DAC's with USB inputs being peripheral devices are endpoints.

Haven't tried it so I don't know for sure but I'd expect it to work as an audio output when other inputs are selected.

However: the problem I think you'll have is that the Dev's a USB peripheral rather than a USB host device.  That means you could record other inputs on a computer (I expect) because the computer is a USB host, but connecting it to a DAC or headphone amp won't work because two USB peripherals won't talk to each other.

By the way, there will be a pretty heavy clue to this insofar as you'll find it hard to get hold of a USB cable that will physically connect the Dev to a DAC or headphone amp - that's intended by design to stop you connecting two peripherals together and then wondering why nothing happens.

Thx for prompt answers. You are right, USB out won't be possible. Should figured it out myself.
