Wow, nice diagrams!

(and yes, I could well have been mistaken on the Romaz issue earlier, I have to say I get pretty confused and dont really read all those things properly - too much info sometimes on the internet!)

Agree, nice diagrams. Something tells me you also work in the IT profession.  Cool

One question, what is the difference between regular AC and dedicated AC?

The diagrams are excellent, and now I fully understand your previous FMC posts. A picture paints a thousand words.....

It also prompts another question. In your previous set up, you run PC, switch, switch, SMS-200. (I'm skipping the FMC's here for clarity). The first switch also feeds the router. By contrast, I run PC, router, switch, mR. I guess I could also run the PC to an additional first switch in the same way, rather than to the router. Would this make any difference? I'm curious why you had what I would have considered unnecessary switch in the chain?

Now it is time to explain....
I am criticizer, i love gadgets, i am very demanding of quality and... i just upgraded.
"You must be crazy even thinking about that", my wife said when confessed to that new sin of "thinking" (on the day of my post's writing).

But, you know, all of that... is still only half of your criticism, gadgetry, upgrade cost. I must by only half-crazy, then! Wink

Thanks guys, using Visio it's very easy to make such diagrams.

@baconbrain, yep I work in IT. I'm a sr. network security specialist working for a big financial in NL. Regarding dedicated vs. regular AC. "dedicated AC" is a separate and direct AC circuit powering only AV equipment using higher quality wiring (directly from the fuse box where the AC enters my house), fuse and AC walloutlets.

@Confused, most 'routers' (many of them are bridge/modem, switch, router, firewall, WiFi access point, DNS/DHCP server all-in-one's) you get from Internet providers have a built-in switch. Assuming all your devices are in the same subnet (e.g. 192.168.0.x): as long as the switches are connected to each other and one has a connection to the built in switch in the router you're alright and can 'shuffle' stuff to your liking.

The diagrams of my situation only show the stereo related stuff. In my previous set up one switch is upstairs and the other is downstairs. There's one long ethernet cable connecting both. Both up- and downstairs switch have multiple devices connected to them besides the stuff in the diagram (e.g. the HTPC downstairs, a regular PC and my work laptop upstairs). My DSL router has a built in switch too but it is of a lower quality so the upstairs switch can be viewed as the central switch. From it there's one ethernet link to the built in switch in the router. The router has no other ethernet connections.

@maxijazz, congrats on your upgrade! Smile

My microRendu is sold, in the end I couldn't be bothered to compare the two/I kept postponing it so I decided to just sell it as I'm happy with the sMS-200. Hope I won't regret it, which might happen when some tweak/mod or manufacturer upgrade is issued. On the other hand SoTM is working on a clock upgrade for the sMS-200 somthey're not sitting still either.

All is tidy again, no more fiber ethernet cable running down the stairs etc. It took me several hours but I've decided to let it run on top of my suspended acoustical ceiling. While I was at it I've run two fiber cables the same route and replaced the living room switch with one of the new pair of FMC's (and SFP modules) I ordered last week. When the need arises for one or more additional ethernet ports in the living room I'll simply comnect the switch to the FMC.

Also I've earthed the AC outlets in my home office/study.

Waiting for two Supra CAT8 cables, when these are delivered I'll test the EMO systems LAN isolator in several spots (between router and switch and inline in the connection between the music server and FMC).

Planning to test a Windows 2012 R2 server installation again with the Audiophile Optimizer (AO) software. Still have a license for version 1.4 (though I might update to version 2 for <40 swiss francs later) so why not try it.

Captains log, star date 25942.5 Wink

It's been a busy two weeks, mostly due to work, so little time and energy for forums. Still, made time to implement some of the plans I had.

- received the two Supra CAT 8 cables. Used one to connect the music server to the FMC used in the path to the SMS-200 and the other between 2nd ethernet interface on the music server to my EMO Systems EN-HD70 LAN isolator and from there a short 25cm CAT7 cable to my upstairs switch. The music server is now isolated from the network, AC and other devices the best I can using stuff I already had.

- the upstairs switch is now powered by the SBooster BOTWS 12V LPSU since I still have it and wasn't using it elsewhere.

- bought a second hand but new and sealed 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD for the music server since I was running out of space

- created a dual boot Windows 10 Pro/Server 2012 R2 installation on it (the W10 partition and all music files were migrated from the previous SSD) and installed Audiophile Optimizer 2.20B4 after upgrading the AO 1.40 license. Reinstalled Roon (now 1.3 build 200) and migrated the Roon database to the WS2012R2 partition.

How does it sound, and what changed how? No idea, not yet anyway, just started listening 20 minutes ago. It sounds really great is all I know. Not very helpful I'm afraid! Smile

End log.

Hi Antoine, many thanks for sharing your findings it is great to follow your experiences and congrats for your amazing system!
I was putting up a very similar source path as yours and I really liked the Visio way of displaying it so I did the same :-)
Only a few things are missing from the flowchart and could you - or any of you guys - have a quick look and let me know if I'm on the wrong direction as I feel that the LAN filter would be redundant in this chain.  I'm also thinking on having a SFP PCiE Card instead of the LAN ethernet and do the first conversion in the PC.
