I started thinking of musicians I've seen live, and then discovered, or re-discovered, their recorded music. My first in this mini-series. It is likely to be very mini, so others will have to step up.

John Abercrombie. We saw him with a quartet at the Casa del Jazz in Rome a few years ago. The music is avant-jazz/ fusion, but also engaging. I'm listening to an older album, Witchcraft. It is quiet and sort of pulses between moments of challenging chords and open smooth phrases; you get pushed and pulled as you listen. Guitar, bass and piano. Can be a better class of background music or worthy of a fine tipple and a darkened room.

Streaming on Deezer Elite.

Hmmmm, five days with no follow-up. I must have offended or anaesthetized the entire DC community. So it falls to me to follow up my own post. I guess this becomes #2 in the mini-series of the live-and-recorded concept.

Some years ago (too many, to be exact) I saw Peter Murphy play at a nifty club here in Vancouver. It was a trio set up; Peter singing, Peter DeStephano on guitar, and Hugh Marsh on Violin; some electronic backing tracks prerecorded as well. Yes, Mr Murphy ex of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and Dali's Car.

It was a great show; there was a fragile, imperfect, almost tenuous feel to the peformance, which sort of surprises one in the world of dark, moody rock. With so little instrumental support, the vocal lines really had to carry a great deal of weight, and carry the tunes. The album Just For Love was recorded as part of this tour. Wonderful sparse, melodic and finely crafted re-imaginings of some of his solo works. I loved it live, I love it on the disc, and I recommend it to you. Not for the 'high quality' of the recording, but for the real, this-is-what-it-sounds-like quality. With this one, you're standing right in front of the stage. Your black trench coat is dirty and your mascara is running....

CD ripped, but probably on streaming services as well.

Damon, I just checked and the album is available on Qobuz. Will check it out later when no 1 son has gone to bed.
Cabaret Voltaire "Micro-Phonies" (LP rip)

Another album that sounds as fresh to me today as it did 30-odd years ago.  Electro/funk.

23 Skidoo "Seven Songs" (LP rip)

Not quite such an easy listen, but equally good fun!

I feel A Certain Ratio will be next on the playlist.

Discovered this album really quite randomly tonight. What a find! It's a jazz/pop/electronica fusion thing that works really well. The vocals are stunning and the title track (Heart Drum) is really quite funky! I've downloaded it from Blue Coast Records in DSD64 although it's also available in DSD128. Sound quality is very good. You can listen to all the tracks before buying. Marketing blurb below...

Heart Drum - The Valence Project

If you love Daft Punk and want something unique and melodic but still close to pop music then try The Valence Project 2 – Heart Drum. Melissa’s voice will stun you. This collaborative album is the brainchild of Gregory James, seasoned guitarist and founder of Valence Records. Also on the album are Brain (the infamous drummer known from Guns N' Roses/Primus/Tom Waits); Kai Eckhardt electric bassist (John McLaughlin to Al Di Meola and beginning a world tour with his own band); Melissa Reese (incredible vocalist and lyricist known for her commercial compositions/keyboard performances with the BC AllStars) Palen (multi-talented rock violinist (performed with Dave Grohl) with solo violin recordings available on Downloads NOW!); and BluCube creating astonishing effects using live sample and loop techniques.
Manu Katché, Neighbourhood. 96/24

Excellent jazz, with a modern twist, and for everyone that know and loves Katche's drumming, his sound is instantly recognisable.
