Please excuse my ignorance, at the moment I have a Vortexbox unit running Squeezelite player via USB into my D200 expert. The Vbox has nearly 2Tb of Flac files on it.
I am very tempted by Phantom after seeing a demonstration last week, thinking 2 with Dialog, but I can't work out how I can play my music. If I connect the Vbox and dialog to my home network, it can't use the Squeezelite player so would it see my files via Ethernet and be able to play them using Spark or does that only work on a computer loaded with the Spark software?
I have all my files mirrored on my PC but I don't want to have it on just to listen to music.
I am not interested in Tidal or Quobuz, I have a Spotify account, but that is just to audition new music.
Am I wasting my time with Phantom or is there a way to listen to stored files?
Sorry if I have asked a lot here, but any advice from folk more knowledgeable than me would be welcome.
Hello Misterpete

I'm not sure how you would ideally like to use it. I have a vortexbox player. When I use the phantoms I usually control it via Spark on a mac mini, but I can configure spark to see the files on the vortexbox.

However the Mac mini does need to be running to do that.

There are a couple of other options though. You could just use bluetooth if you can control your vortexbox from a phone or similar. Or, again with the phone, you could use a device like apple airport express with an optical output. Stream the files to that then use the optical input on the dialog.

Also, if you can connect the vortexbox to the dialog, you could use something like a Ifi I-link to convert from usb to optical and again, play like that.

Good luck!
Thanks, it's never easy is it?
One imagines that in a few years all of these things will be mutually compatible in a totally intuitive way. I've only been doing computer audio for 10 years so I expect any minute now it will all be fixed ....

AAs far as I've been able to discern, if you use a laptop you need to use the Spark application. This is a bit like having to buy Ford gasoline if you buy a Ford car. If you want the Phantoms to be source independent, you need to use Bluetooth. This is a real shame for a speaker that is being sold as an ideal transducer for high resolution audio, but current Bluetooth is good enough that it actually sounds ok. Devialet has designed Dialog as a generalizable multi room system, when they should IMHO be optimizing it first for two channel listening in a single room.
Most PCs have Bluetooth. Can it be a solution?
Agree with you using BT is a shame on a high end speaker since BT is using audio compression ( SBC, AAC or apt-X )
One easy option - if you are iOS or MacOS user - is to hook an Apple Airport Express to the optical input of your Phantom using a mini Toslink to Toslink cable.
You can then use Airplay - which is a lossless transmission - and totally for get about Spark, because now you can use any of your usual music apps.
That's what I do and this totally change the experience Smile

I find it so frustrating not to be able to find a simple way to use Phantom. I have now cancelled my proposed purchase as I can't find a suitable way to utilise them without buying a lot of extra equipment.
I am sure that if I was a bit more knowledgeable about networking I could make it all work but after spending the weekend researching optical converters and other options my head hurts and I am going to stick with my D200. I love the sound and the convenience of Phantom but I feel Devialet have shot themselves in the foot with the lack of standard digital connections.
Don't get so depressed Smile there are plenty of little boxes that convert USB to Toslink. You can see some in this thread : https://m.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/comm...will_work/
It's just plug and play, no network knowledge needed

I will look into that. I've had such bad experiences with Apple Airport that I hadn't considered that option, but its a very interesting approach. If I could use Audirvana (DSD) or even Google Play Music (it plays FLAC!), I'd be in heaven.

Thank you!
