I have a problem that has started since I upgraded to El Capitan (both 10.11 and 10.11.1)

After a few hours use I get distortion using USB (very similar to the AIR problems).
Pausing and then continuing cures the problem until the next time it occurs.

I have tried all sorts of things, killing as many processes as possible, turning off supposedly energy consuming options but nothing seems to work.

The only possible clue I have is that in "System Preferences" ... "Audio" the entry for "Devialet USB Audio 2.0" has a type of "USB". I have a recollection that previously it was something else that implied that the USB was asynchronous.

I would be very grateful if someone with a similar configuration to me could take a look at "System Preferences" and let me know what type they have for Devialet USB.

There is nothing in the console log to help.

Thanks
@canyelles - What model and year of Mac Mini?

I have a 2012 with 4 USB ports on back - connected via USB to Devialet with nary a hitch running El Capitan.

Have you tried using a different USB port on the Mac Mini to see if the issue persists?

I will take a look at my system preferences tonight and let you know.

Also have you tried a different USB cable?
Thanks

It is a 2014 mini, 3ghz i7, 16gb memory, 512gb ssd. I only bought it so that I could use USB because of the problems with AIR.
I should make clear that I had no problems with Yosemite with the same setup.
I have also tried inserting an uptone regen. No differences, either as a solution to the problem or to the sound quality. It is currently not in use.

I have tried different ports, nothing. I haven't tried another cable but don't really see the point, most of the time it works fine.

I have a habit of appending music to my current playlist, meaning that there can be a continuous stream of music for 2-4 hours. It is under these circumstances that it goes wrong. For the last few days I have tried to not play longer than about an hour without stopping. I haven't had any problems using it like this. Hence my suspicion that there is something amiss with the asynchronous USB. It seems to me that the longer you continuously play, the more chance the two ends have of getting out of sync.
Under System Preferences - Sound - Devialet USB Audio 2.0 with TYPE = USB.

This is for my system.

What music playback software are you using?
Thanks again.

I am using iTunes. I realise it is not 'audiophile approved' but it has features I use which are not available anywhere else.

I guess I need someone still using Yosemite to respond to my question.
I'm using itunes and since I've upgraded to El Capitan I've noticed a few drop outs. I play music all day when I'm home and can't tell whether it happens after a certain amount of use. Mine is a few years old, 128 HDD, i5 and 16Gig of memory. Music sits on an external HDD via firewire. It's only a short drop out though. No distortion.
The distortion I get is a crackling sound on top of the music. It's interesting that you have had dropouts, the problems with AIR seem to present themselves in different ways as well.

I would really be interested in seeing what a yosemite user sees in System Preferences for the Devialet. If it is something other than "USB" it is something that can be pursued with either Apple or Devialet.
I'm sure mine always said 'Devialet USB audio 2.0' and 'USB' in the type. I could check on my laptop that's still on Yosemite but my dog is having a nap on my lap... what do you do?
It went wrong yesterday, just after I started playing some music (so much for my theory)

Interesting but doesn't really help me to decide who to chase. Both?
I looked and don't see anything like that. I will have another look when I get a drop out
