When it comes to combining speakers over wireless, the combination of AirPlay, Airport Express, and Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil app works very well.
AirPlay is Apple's wireless audio protocol, which streams over a lossless codec. Some hardware (mainly, consumer-grade wireless speakers, and home theater received) support it out of the box.
To use other components with AirPlay, one can use Airport Express. It's sold as a wireless router, but contains a decent D/A converter AND an optical out. It has ethernet ports, so you can hard wire it to your main router to eliminate a possible point of failure.
Typically, AirPlay is used to stream to a single device. ITunes began supporting multi-device streaming, but it is limited in functionality. To really tie things together, use the Airfoil app. This lets you set per-device levels, EQ, and even millisecond delay to correct for room placement. The source audio can come from Mac, PC, or iOS device.
