I had been streaming music from my NAS to the dev using AIR with great result.  Very happy.

Recently, I got an XLO coaxial cable and tried hooking up my metronome CD player to the dev that way.
Now I have a problem.  I can hear everything.  The low level noise in the recording, people walking in the music hall, door closing....etc
Everything.

I went back to the same lossless recording on my NAS...not as detailed, not as lively.  Not close to the CD quality.

I am now convinced that using a good CDP as transport with the dev is better than streaming using AIR.

Anyone with similar experience?
Not together with AIR but pretty similar:

In my personal quest for SQ (above convenience) it's quite funny that you just posted your findings. As I mentioned in the other thread, I also realised just earlier this week that my MSB UMT still sounds better than any streaming that I have tried so far. Currently HQPlayer+NAA, no Mutec yet. The lower SQ I attribute to the lower quality of the USB input on the Devialet compared to AES/EBU. I am not sure whether I should invest more in the streaming route at all.
On the convenience: yes, it's there. At the same time having put a CD in the tray and having pressed the play button and having listened to the end of the CD was quite an experience yesterday, rather than fiddling through different tracks on the iPad remote app. I started streaming once many years ago and thought it was kind of the fast food version of listening to music and went back to CD and even LP. I'm inclined to think a bit that way again.

Am glad to hear that you took this "bold step" ... congrats !!

BTW - things get even better if you had an AES/EBU XLR output on that Metronome ... my Kalista Ref has and I use that ... Its supposed to be the best sounding input for the Dev !!
