Not sure if this weird problem has been reported before.

System is D440

The problem happened a couple of times while playing via SPDIF and USB input recently.

Volume would randomly drop to no sound, when checked the volume had dropped to -80dB or so.  I could turn the volume back to normal level and all is good again.

Any idea what would cause this?
Something similar has been reported elsewhere on the site. The problem cited there was fluctuation in volume with the remote control untouched - so potentially hazardous to loudspeakers. This was not correctable by just taking the batteries out and reinstating - the only solution offered was to have the remote replaced.

The App is a temporary work-round

I got the same thing but to me the volume increased instead..... Sad nothing happened to my speakers but this was after I turned down the volume with the remote and walked away as the phone rang and I heard from the other room that the volume got louder.
In my case (story similar to Octaviars) I have replaced batteries with fresh ones to fix the issue. My firmware version is 10.0.7.
I have had the same issue (decreasing volume) once so far.
I've had this about 4 times over the past month, both increasing and decreasing volumes continuing after making small volume adjustments on the remote. I note that a couple of the batteries only give about 1.4v on a multimeter so I have replaced all the batteries and will see if this improves things
I have had the same problem over the last few months, probably ten times in total - mainly volume increase, but also decrease.  I experienced both yesterday. I would be interested to see if new batteries make a difference.
Or if the new FW solves the problem. Is this one of the undeclared bugs that has been fixed?

Sadly not fixed by the firmware. I have this issue multiple times a day and also with the new firmware. Already had my remote replaced 2 times.
I have not had any problems with new batteries so far, though it is still early days. As an experiment I put in some very old batteries (total voltage 3.8v) and could reproduce the volume change issue very easily. So on my system it would seem that the problem seems to start when the voltage drops to about 4.3v.
