Many floorstanding speakers appear to conform to similar proportions.

Height around 110 / 120cm high.
Widths of the speaker cabinet around 20-30cm, some wider measurements to include feet.

Are there any highly-recommended speakers that are a lot wider. Say 50cm? Perhaps even a little shorter?

Kind of an odd question. Why is width a selection criteria?
Jbl 4344, 4345, 4355, 66000, 67000. Those are my recommendation. There is also other of course.
Just curious more than anything. The wider you go, the bigger woofer you can have.

Lots of old speakers have squarer proportions. I like the look but you don't see them as much anymore.

Looks aside, they need to sound amazing. So, I don't know if the wider proportions are not so good for sound.
Sonus Faber Elipsa, I think. May also be some other expensive SF speaker that is much wider than deep.

Harbeth and Spendor Classic monitors follow the "old school" proportions and while they are not floorstanders, they are large volume and can be bought with short stands.
