Hi,

This French site (https://www.lesnumeriques.com/platine-mu.../test.html) recently test Phantom Gold latency and it is around 190 milliseconds which means it shouldn’t be usable in a Home Cinema setup.

Can someone please test the latency of the Phantom in varies between theses configurations ? How can I test latency myself ?

Single Phantom White (Optical)
Single Phantom Silver (Optical)
Single Phantom Gold (Optical) - 190 ms

I assume that Phantom are connected in Ethernet for stereo test.
Pair Phantom White (Optical port on Phantom)
Pair Phantom White (Optical port on Dialog)
Pair Phantom Silver (Optical port on Phantom)
Pair Phantom Silver (Optical port on Dialog)
Pair Phantom Gold (Optical port on Phantom)
Pair Phantom Gold (Optical port on Dialog)

Does someone use their Phantom in a Home Cinema setup ? Does it work well ? With what setup ?

I was thinking about upgrading my Dialog to the one that support AirPlay and maybe my Phantom but only if it can be use as a decent Home Cinema.

Thanks,
I think this is actually really bad because the Phantom Gold is the top of the line Phantom and if other Phantom are less good they might be even slower ?

If the latency is mostly time spend in processing audio it’s even worse because there are only a few options available:
- improve processing power (all Phantom already sold cannot improve)
- improve software (might not be easy or enough)
- reduce audio processing (might degrade the sound)
- a combination of all the solutions above (can reduce the latency the most but bring a lot of issues)
From what I understand Devialet should aim for a way lower latency https://gamedev.stackexchange.com/a/74975 something around 90ms tops preferably around 50ms.

It’s seem to be a huge gap from 190ms to 50ms and they don’t seems to be able to close this gap.
The best way to close this gap is if they have an HDMI input and output to make this latency go away.
This latency impact video game experience and music playback too.

As anyone play video games on his Phantom or play some music instrument with it ?
There is no way around this unfortunately. The subject keeps popping up on this forum. One will have to delay video to match the delay in Phantoms.

The Kii Three speaker has a setting where the DSP in the speaker only does crossover between drivers and no time compensation. This way latency is removed, but part of the speakers magic is gone. See https://www.stereophile.com/content/kii-...oudspeaker where latency is documented in measurements. With time correction latency is around 90ms, without it's zero.
Phantom has no settings like this. Also, Phantoms are not time coincident despite the delay introduced by DSP (a serious error in my view). Devialet has delivered Phantoms without latency to installers, however this was by special order as the firmware must be factory installed at time of production. There is no way to do this for the end user.

EDIT: a comment on HDMI. This would not solve anything related to latency. Delay in Phantoms occur after inputs.
My experience is to use an oppo 103/105/203/205 device which has A/V sync settings !
You can set from -100ms to +200ms by +/-10 increment
This has resolved the latency issue in my gold system (set at +80ms)

Very useful, the oppo devices mentioned have an hdmi input.
A/V sync setting is applied to this input too !
So can plug any box / video game with hdmi output without latency issue -Smile

Hope this help
This is a problem for live music via an instrument or DJing, as well as for video games.

It would be great to have "low latency" mode, even at a cost to performance.

Yes, this will work. Brilliant of Oppo to include this!

Absolutely! Real time use is not possible unfortunately.
I use a very old version of Zoom Player on the laptop dedicated to video and it is possible to fine tune the latency from +/- 10ms with no limit.
