UTP and FTP - the difference.
UTP stands for Unshielded Twister Pair. It is a cable with unshielded twisted pairs. For FTP cables (foiled twisted pair), the wire pairs are surrounded by a metallic shield. In general, FTP cables are less sensitive to power line interference than UTP cables. The crosstalk between the individual wire pairs is also reduced by the shielding.

With cheap LAN cables, there is still a serious difference, the individual wires are made of aluminum and coated only with a thin layer of copper !! Aluminum is not exactly the best conductor !!!

Be a bit careful where you're buying. I just saw a flat cable being sold on ebay as a cat 6 cable. There's no way on earth that cable can work as well as a twisted pair cable yet the seller has all the technical data you would expect from a proper cable. Draka looks like a proper cable maker. Just don't buy it from China.

I got external 6e copper FTP cable - £50 for 50m. The one-part connectors I got are impossible to use with the foil, so I've ordered some more expensive three-part connectors.
