Yerp, that's exactly how it works: iPad >NAS< 220 Pro. No computer/laptop required.
Plus don't even need the CI board for this to work as roon has native AIR drivers built-in.
TV is ethernet connected for Netflix and Amazon etc..
@Womaz thanks for starting this thread! And thanks to all for the rich contributions.

As some of you may have noticed I have been away for a while but I'm finally back.

I still have my Devialet 400 (not yet upgraded to 440 Pro) and directly fed via USB from my Aurender X100L which gives me access to local mucis stored on the built in HDD and Tidal which has excellent integration with Aurender, and the sound is absolutely amazing.

The only downside here is the very basic and retro Conductor iOS app that controls my Aurender and the incomplete meta data of my locally stored albums.

So obviously I decided to finally try Roon. So i installed Roon core on a Windows 10 surface with i7 processesor and SSD. Installation was straight forward and my D400 was detected as a Roon end point. Awesomeace interface, seamless control and library compilation was impressive but unfortunately Roon on Air/WiFi sound quality was way too inferior compared to my Aurender USB direct connection to D400. (almost the same challenge as @Womaz)

I also believe that USB connection in my system is superior to any other connection I have tried.

The question is will the upgrade to Expert Pro with CI bring any improvement to Roon on Air/WiFi ?

@midi you mentioned that Zenith is working perfectly for you. Which connection are using with ur Devialet, USB or Ethernet? Also are you using Zenith as Core/Player or are you using another player between Zenith and Devialet? Lastly can you please shed some light on how easy it was install Roon on Innuos Zenith?

Thanks

P.S. I also sometimes experience streaming issues with Tidal on my current setup, but it is generally infrequent and the sound quality is so good that I'm willing to ignore the issue.

Hi

Did you set up Roon to be exclusive mode on your Surface ?

I accept that there can be differences, but find it hard to believe that Roon on Air is “way too inferior” if everything is set up correctly. Sounds to me like something was out of whack.

no it is not exclusive. but the sound stage was narrower and sound was kind of closed compared to the direct USB from Aurender playing the same album from Tidal

I can second @amabrok that Roon--Air/Ethernet/WiFi is by far inferior to my USB-connection.
Roon has less details, less dynamics, everything sounds less live/real. No way to accept if you're used to the superb performance of USB...USB just pulls you into the music...at least in my system and in the system of a friend (Aurender S10/D250/WA Sophia, we're even shocked by the poor performance of AES/EBU of the S10 compared to its USB to the D250).

It is interesting that I am not the only one to feel USB is much superior. The difference was very noticeable right from the start.
I thought it was maybe just in my system as I have the Olympica speakers and have just about managed to get them a meter from my back wall. With Air it sounded like I had put them against the wall. The bass boomed, and for me bass has to be right as it stopped me hearing detail in my opinion.
USB is way superior in my set up and I also recall the Melco was a big step up on AIR when I introduced it to my set up.

Hear hear.

AES.EBU, Digital coax, Optical and Air/Wifi, all sounded inferior to USB on my system. the only connection i did not try is Air/Ethernet, could it really bring a major difference over Air/WIfi?
@amabrok You are very welcome and I am pleased the thread has helped.
Do you know what i love about Tidal and Roon. Its new release day and in Tidal I have added four albums to my collection.......It feels like I have bought them as they are now in my album collection. I love the integration. Tidal totally changed my listening habits and I am discovering so much more music. Roon has just enhanced that experience.

Thanks @markush

I suppose this is for "Expert Pro" only and both @Womaz and I are still on "Expert"
