@David A , I fully agree with all of your points. Smile

(I just though I’d add the caveats which I forgot the first time, of course for anyone reading this but especially those not already ‘active’ for many years in our hobby)

Assuming you are using the same user name, it is good to hear about your EtherRegen experience on the Uptone sponsored forum. Congratulations, you are the first Phantom owner using the EtherRegen.

I am not on the AudiophileStyle forum and have a question. You are currently using 3 Ethernet cables, which the EtherRgen manual suggests to avoid when using the A side as output. Have you tried 1 Ethernet cable to the Dialog and use PLC?

Well noticed snoopy

No, I do not use a PLC because all of my expirations with switches, even with LPS on it etc, various internet cables and Cisco 2960, (which led me to the EtherRegen)

In all cases, SQ Ethernet was better than PLC in my situation.

Now with the EtherRegen which can play 100% backwards I had to play for the B to A side. Of course nothing else connected to A side, only devialet phantoms and dialog.

After only 2 days with the EtherRegen in use, I can already say that I could not imagine that it could be so much better.

I wait a bit until the DOS2 software update is rolled out a bit better and Roon works well on this, then the Dialog can be removed and I only have 2 Phantom Golds on the A side.

According to Uptone a good choice to do it that way.

Thank you.  I have had no problems with PLC with my Golds using DOS1 but do not have enough network ports to try an all Ethernet setup.  When I get the EtherRegen, I will experiment with both PLC and all Ethernet setup.

I had also no problems with PLC, but in my situation ethernet sounds better!

Moreover, i think connecting the EtherRegen to only the dialog and the Pantoms via PLC is not a good idea. It will make some difference, but you bring the pollution from your power grid to the dac’s in your phantoms.  Confused Angel

And  if i understand correctly, the EtherRegen is precisely designed to eliminate the pollution before your DAC as much as possible  Rolleyes

Sorry for my Englisch
Alpha-Audio did a remarkable blind-test, camparing seven audiophile switches. They invited some readers to participate, and published their findings (in Dutch) today.

Switches tested:

- Standaard Netgear (To get used to sound / baseline) (149 euro, 24 poorten)
- Fidelizer EtherStream (399 euro)
- Ansuz switch (1999 euro)
- Fiber (250 euro compleet)
- Silent Angel Bonn N8 (395 euro)
- SoTM – basismodel (999 euro)
- Meraki enterprise 8-poort met fiber en PoE (799 euro)

Aim was to determine wheather differences could be heard and, if so, which switch would score best in a blind-test.

For those interested (they also included some diagrams with scores per switch):

Nice, and thanks for sharing this!!

Reassuring to see that SOtM is at the top of the pile, even if the differences are fairly modest.

Although I never compared the base model to the version with the sCLK-EX module which I own, I did notice a pretty decent uptick in performance when connecting to a master clock (Cybershaft OP14). Then of course running two units in bridged mode (connected by fibre using SFP ports) with both clocked was another fair decent improvement.

I do however agree with the conclusions of their shootout: namely that the differences are pretty small compared to other components and tweaks, however they are clearly audible. I do find the clocking aspect very interesting however since to my ears this is where the real magic happens.

Cheers,

Guillaume

Top, thanks.

And now an burned-in EtherRegen   Idea

You are welcome. I am sure your setup trumps all the above Guillaume. Thanks again for sharing your experiences with us. Reading about how your system sounds makes me yearn to hear it live.

I was surprised at how different switches in the test by Alpha-Audio compared at the different price points. The best sounding solution from Guillaume is pretty pricy, and for those with a tighter budget there are some nice routes to follow it seems. The standard SoTM does great, but I think I would want to hear it next to the Silent Angel to decide if I want to spend more than double the money. Also surprised the blind test results in the Ansuz not doing too well as you would expect from the most expensive one in the test (and worse than a standard switch that costs next to nothing).

Comparing the standard SoTM (€999) and/or Silent Angel (€395) in a blind test against the EtherREGEN would give us an idea what would be the best option in the < €1000,- range solutions.

Indeed that would be nice.
