Hy Mike,

you can run the Roon Core although on a NAS: https://kb.roonlabs.com/Roon_Server_on_NAS

I still have it on the PC, because my DS216j is not the right one for this Solution. A 918+ works fine, as example.

I have not seen any control software that can compete with Roon.

I used to run Roon on my regular PC but as you write MIKE not the best solution so I got a NUC and runs Roon ROCK on it. Starts up in around 20s and consumes very little power and it workes flawless with my SOtM sMS-200 Ultra.
I personally don’t like Roon because:

- doesn’t support folder view
- way too expensive
- doesn’t want to support folder view
- 99% of my music are not having proper meta data so it cannot sort them into albums/Artists
- Control is so so, doesn’t support volume button on iPhone to change volume
- Navigation between pages/view is only Ok consider its price.

So I am seeking something else to replace Roon.

Yes, I know that. I tried to utilize NAS (Synology) as a player (AudioServer, Roon, etc).
It is realy bad solution, faaaar from my expectation in terms os SQ. There are lots of reasons: not audio-optimized software, poor power supply, quite noisy work and shitty USB socket (Ethernet connction is difficult to use for audio transfer - impossible if NAS does not have double RJ45 sockets).
