I need to figure out a way to control the volume of my Phantom Gold's without using the lousy app or the knob that have failed since day one. Even after a replacement.

My plan is to put the speakers in direct mode and feeding it with a digital optical (TOSLINK) signal for each speaker (stereo). The problem is that my Onkyo NX717 only have analog pre amp out (L/R). I have to get a Analog to Digital converter, but I'm not certain at all that I can control the volume with my Onkyo after running the signal through the converter.

The other posts I've seen on this topic suggests converters, but there's also talk about the users having to use the app or knob for volume after this. There is not definite conclusion of what solution can solve this. Can anyone help me out suggesting what could be done to achieve this?

Thanks!
An AD converter and an optical splitter would do the trick. The speakers need to be in direct optical mode.

Thanks or answering, ragwo! Could you elaborate a bit?

I need to use the Pre Out right? That means I have to use the AD converter as you suggest. One AD converter to a splitter is better than two AD converters to get the same two optical out? And what would happen to the volum control. Will it pass through the converter and the splitter no matter what, or do I need some special equipment? I would like to avoid low quality devices which introduce white nose as well. I heard some had a problem with that.

Any suggestions for specific equipment? Preferably cheaper things, as long as it don't ruin the sound.
there is a way to control volume without using spark or the devialet remote. However, it's a little complex if you're not a little computer savvy. And you need an iphone and an always on computer or raspberry pi on your network.

Using the homebridge plugin mentioned in post 25 I'm using my iphone and Siri to control the volume. You can also use the Home app in ios to do the same.

I can now say "Hey Siri set the Phantom to XX" where XX is the volume from 0 to 100. It works really well and the volume change is immediate.
There are other ways to do it too. In the thread I linked to above.

I would have chosen a good ADC, such as the Mytek ADC 96 or 192, and an optical splitter. A good one is mentioned in another thread, I can't remember which one. In optical direct mode you can choose if the speaker should be left to right or mix. The preamp will control the volume and you can avoid using Spark.
You can control it by Logitech Harmony or similar with the "Bridge". Ich think this is way better than using analog to digital conversion.
I use Mytek Stereo96 ADC and it’s incredible. Absolutely transparent. I use it to play my SME Model 10A turntable on a pair of Phantom Golds.
Thanks for the suggestions! The audio delay that I'm seeing with the system are a problem, so the direct mode would be preferred. However, the lack of being able to control the volume with a universal remote is troubling. Which leaves me wanting to look further into this one:

Sounds promising! I have a Logitech Harmony Elite remote. Could you tell me more about this Bridge? I can't find any obvious bridge solutions on google. Would it be possible to combine it with the Direct mode?

Spud,

Maybe have a look at this setup --> https://devialetchat.com/Thread-Developp...5#pid78395

I've removed the dialog and replaced it with a Yamaha WXC-50 hooked up via an active optical splitter to two white phantoms each configured in direct optical mode.

I chose the WXC-50 as it was the only cost effective solution I could find to give me volume control in the digital domain. Other advantage is that the audio delay has been reduced dramatically.

This system is now integrated into my universal remote as the WXC-50 uses a IR transmitter. It also comes with the Musiccast App that allows full control from a phone/tablet.

I tried the "bridge" solution that required running a server on a small PC or rasberrypi etc etc and frustratingly couldn't get it to work. My coding skills are not that great!!

Hope this offer another solution for you.

Cheers
