Hello All,

Forgive me if this is an old topic. I have searched, and also looked at the Devialet website. I am looking for guidance on the connection of a subwoofer to my D220 Pro CI.

I have the two digital inputs closest to the antenna assigned to my Sonos Connect and to a CD transport; I think these are digital 1 and digital 2. There are no other inputs or outputs assigned to any other port on the back of the amp. These two connections seem to be the only jacks that can be configured as outputs. Is this correct?

Looking at the configurator, I cannot tell that I can assign the default Line 1 or Phono 2 to be pre outs.

My questions are:

1. Can I assign one of the other connections to be a pre out to go to a powered subwoofer?

2. Are there any particular connections that you recommend I look for in a subwoofer, or that are necessary for a subwoofer connection?

3. I think that I assign a pre-out for the subwoofer with a low-pass flier; is this correct?

On balance, I do not need a great deal of additional bass, and really, I'm just trying to give my wife a bit more boogie when she falls into the electro-dance party mode. Just a bit more air movement, not a seismic shudder. I'm also not looking for a home theatre/ movie impact. I absolutely want a musical product. Explosions are not an issue.

I'm attaching a screen shot of my current configurator in the hope that this makes advice simpler and easier for any who can help. And I need all the help I can get so any and all advice and guidance is very welcome.

Thanks very much.

Hello Damon. I'm pretty confident you're right that you can't assign the phono or line 1 signals as outputs. Have you considered using the speaker outputs to connect directly to the "high-level" inputs of a sub-woofer? (According to some sub-woofer manufacturers this is preferred to using a line-level signal.) You would then need to rely on a low-pass filter in the sub, of course, and the main speakers would still be taking the whole frequency range, but it sounds as though that might fit your needs.

I'm sure others will have more imaginative suggestions!

Did you have a particular model of sub-woofer in mind yet?

Hi Damon.
It is possible to configure the inputs you are using at the moment as pre-outs. You could then configure the next two connections as digital inputs as per the example below.

@Axel Argh, of course!
Thanks guys. I really appreciate, as always, the rapid and helpful responses. @Axel, thanks for the diagram of the config; saves me continuing to guess, and stutter and mumble and swear to myself as I get tangled up in wires.

@thumb5 I don't have a particular specimen  in mind. But constraints are size and location. The sub would need to be off to the side of the left speaker, facing across the front plane of the Dalis. That may be too compromised a location, and if so that would be the end of it. But as I said, I'm really looking for a modest extension of the bass, rather than thunder.

Using Canuck Audio Mart, (CAM as it's usually referred to) is a good marketplace for buying and selling used equipment, and that is where I have been looking. Two listings have my initial interest. The first, from Craigslist, is a  PMC sub and the second a custom scanspeak sub from CAM. Both are very local to me, which is a bonus.

Certainly a fuller range speaker (?) would do the job, but that then puts me back into the big boxes that need storage, both while we are home, and then when we are away. I just wish I could find something that is very compact, not an adolescent thumper and yet more than a toy that comes with computer speakers.

Finally, I realize that I'd give up SAM, which I really like with the Dali's. I may well be put off this pursuit fairly quickly but I want to be more informed either way.

Thanks friends.
I don't think that you do have to give up SAM. Devialet's suggestion, from some years ago now, was to set the subwoofer to a very low frequency and go from there. If the result is clearly weird, the phase on the subwoofer should be inverted.

I have a 1000 Pro and am wondering how to connect a REL subwoofer using the high-level approach. I think that the red and yellow wires go to the positive terminals of the bridged amplifiers while the black is initially not connected. If there is a hum problem, then the black is earthed to the chassis.

Correct?

No need to give up SAM, it's not a one or the other scenario. If you need something smaller then have you considered a REL S3 SHO or it's replacement the S510? It needs to be something that is commensurate with your current system and room size for best performance, a cheap subwoofer will likely just give you that uncontrolled boom that you want to avoid. I think you also need to stop looking at this from a point of view of just low end extension as a well set up subwoofer will improve the sound across the lower ranges, adding texture to voices and instruments and when properly integrated the difference in sound will amaze you. It's a slippery slope though as once you've integrated a sub it's hard to go back.
Thanks @fraserhadden and @Laura

It is good to know that SAM can remain enabled.

I do agree that quality in a sub may be especially important, and REL has been mentioned as one of the superior products. As I ponder this addition further, I'll keep an eye out for something of that quality. The is no point or value in compromising one's system with an improper sub.
A B&W sub I use has stereo line in
I reconfigured the digital in as pre-out, set the output to low pass at 120Hz
Then set the main speakers to roll off at 120Hz with high pass

The sub has a variable gain and some listening was needed to get the integration correct

Then it was necessary to adjust the position of the sub in the room. This took a bit more time
120 Hz is pretty high.
What speakers are you using?
