Hey all.

Just took my new 108s for a spin this week at a party. Was pretty excited.  Played house music and techno for 4+ hours with almost always 80 or above on the volume. Stereo pair. At first they sounded great, but eventually they couldn’t handle the volume. They started to decrease in output, and the bass started making weird pounding noises, almost as if someone was banging against the wall. I think I may have blown one or both of them. I did find one of the speakers to have the front clip around the tweeter blown off.

Has anyone had experience reaching the limit of these things? Should I expect to not use these things at parties and use regular PAs instead? Not sure if it matters but output was via RCA to Digital converter (and optical in).

Your thoughts and help is appreciated, thanks!
JC
IMHO you did nothing wrong. Devialet advertised the Phantoms to be able to play at 100% volume with no distortion. They never explained such a limitation of sustained high volume use.

Sounds like these are brand new so I’m sure you’ll be covered under warranty unless they find some damage due to external factors.

For reference, I have a pair of Silvers since 1995 and have put them through their paces without issue.

I think you just might be unlucky with your Phantoms. Devialet apparently has 100 phantoms running at 100% 24/7 at their HQ so take that for what you will. I’ve also got a pair of Gold Phantoms and have had them at 100% for a few hours with no issues so I recommend contacting Devialet for a replacement Smile

1995?!
Regardless of volume or duration of use, pieces should not fall off the speakers. Could you please post a picture?
you did nothing wrong. I play my stereo pair at 80% for 6 hours, 10 times a week. Every month or 2 months i throw a party and they are on 100% for like 8 hours.
if no one bumped your speaker, it is not your fault, so devialet wil give u a new one under warranty.
Hey so what an awesome community, you guys are great.
Glad to hear that my experience was abnormal and you guys let it rip without issue.
Attached is the pic of the front piece that popped off. I've been able to clip it back on since.
Two follow up questions...
The sound issues started after about 3 hours of playing time... I noticed that if I turned down the music for a bit, and then turned it back up it would pump much better.
1) Any chance it was my RCA to Digital converter causing issues? Maybe it couldn't handle the horse. Tried to buy the Arch but it's sold out.
2) Any chance it was the piece that popped off causing issue? Doubt it but maybe.
Next time when it happens a good test would be Bluetooth to see if I can isolate out the RCA.
Again, appreciate all the comments. I'll reach out to Devialet and see what they say.

Isn't that part just magnetic? I mean you can remove it normally. You sure no one bumped into it? But anyway, that one is removeable and you can just put it back (it only fits one way).

IIRC there are posts with images of that, but can't remember what post was about.

The DSP wizardry of the Phantom should prevent damage caused by any input signal, so I doubt the RCA to toslink conversion is to blame. Just out of curiosity, why RCA to toslink? Did you hook up a DJ set of some kind? The magnetic cover for the tweeter can't cause the issues you describe, I believe you unfortunately have faulty speaker(s). Did both behave the same way?

Exactly. DJ gear to the 108s using RCA to toslink. Ignored the delay issues. Is there a better setup?
Couldn't tell if both were behaving the same way. Only really inspected the one speaker.
