Full Version: Optical digital quiet?

Hi

My optical Toslink connection between BT TV box and phantom is a lot quieter than when using UPnP.

I need to turn the volume up to over 50 to get to a level closer to 30 via UPnP.

I bought a fairly cheap QED Toslink cable so not sure if the sound level is caused by the cable or the TV box output.

Anyone else have similar issues? Don’t want to invest in better cable if that isn’t causing the sound difference. I have never connected to optical on the Phantoms before so have no benchmark.
Cheers

Happens to me as well. With optical connection from a couple sources. Analog line in for the phantom ii is also much lower output. In theory I should be agnostic to just increasing the volume to get the levels that I want, but it’s clear there’s some compression happening when I do that. Not sure if somehow the setup of the hybrid amplifiers means the speaker isn’t the same at (low line in + high volume) vs (high line in + low volume). In theory they should be equivalent (I think?) but doesn’t seem to act that way. V curious if anyone has insight here.

Is there maybe a volume control in the BT TV box? My thinking is that volume should be about the same for Toslink and UPnP.

Is there is a sensitivity control for the analog input in the web interface? I know there is one for the Phantom II Custom.
Can’t find any volume control on the outputs from the BT TV box. I think it is a fixed level output.

I can live with the different volume levels from UPnP and Toslink just need to remember to turn it down after tv listening.

S/PDIF (Coax, Toslink) full scale digital (0dBFS) should produce similar loudness to UPnP, but it is of course possible that the TV box has a fixed attenuation on the digital signal.
Thanks that is what I think and it’s the digital out that is quieter.
I don’t think a cable is likely to limit the volume and the fact it was rather cheap is not the primary effect.

I asked devialet about this as I’d assume same and as I am debating between using optical or Dante audio-over-ip (what devialet pushes)  this is response, though I’ve asked for more clarification. Could be that they “map” volumes for line in differently to respect a broader range of input levels, or possibly the below means that line inputs will always be constrained vs wireless, though that seems unlikely.

I just spoke to my technical team. What I found out, is that it is normal for the volume on the phantom II to be lower on line in or optical as this is to protect the drivers. In other words, it is intended this way. They also shared it also depends on the cable as well. When you use Dante, you can control a lot of things via the Dante controller. Things such as audio quality , maximum bandwidth, volume etc. a lot of options. In short, highly customisable when using Dante.
