RE: My Phantom voyage - ragwo - 11-Sep-2024

Tweeter removed.

The mid woofer is held by a M8 bolt.

Clever engineering. The connections to the tweeter and mid woofer are prongs, just as the woofers.

Next,  swapping the internals.

Tomorrow I'll test the speaker before gluing the dust caps in place. That's actually the hardest part when fixing the Phantom.

RE: My Phantom voyage - ragwo - 12-Sep-2024

So, yesterday's tomorrow is almost over; here's the result of today's about 15 minutes of tinkering:
Aluminium tweeter replaced by the titanium tweeter from the Gold

Everything is tested OK, so a cheap Phantom 108dB in matte black will be listed when I can find the dust caps I removed a couple of years ago.

Next up, using the scraps to fix a dead ZigBee Silver on DOS1. The one to the right, that is. The other one, also a ZigBee on DOS1, should actually be in working order.

RE: My Phantom voyage - ragwo - 15-Sep-2024

The speaker supposed to be in working order is now dumb. Spark, the vintage Devialet app, and Spotify think it's playing music, but it's dead silent. With a bit of luck I'm able to fix the dead amplifiers.

RE: My Phantom voyage - ragwo - 18-Sep-2024

A quick update.
The silent dinosaur Silver is now up and running. I had a spare amplifier board laying around that did the trick. Unfortunately the mid woofer is blown, so I I'm searching for a donor speaker. Regarding amplifier boards, I actually had two spares, and the other one was, to my surprise, a BT board running DOS2. I bought the board as faulty, but it wasn't. I'll probably sell the Phantom, as it won't pair with the ZigBee one.
Behold the beauty!

As you can see, the Devialet logo is in the wrong colour as the mid woofer came from a Gold. I do have a spare ring with the right logo colour, so I'll swap before selling it.

Impressive! (You should consider changing your alias here to Dr. Phantom Wink )

Thanks!
It's actually not that hard, and you don't have to have any knowledge of electronics to fix a Phantom I, as long as you have spare parts, besides the good habit of unplugging the speaker from the mains before tinkering.
Hopefully the Phantom Saga continues, I still have a chassis for a Phantom II waiting for internals. I've never disassembled the II, so that would be fun. Thankfully there's a how to on YouTube. It involves prying loose a glued in place woofer with a hammer and a screwdriver. I will definitly make a mess of it.

RE: My Phantom voyage - ragwo - 23-Sep-2024

Finally assembled and ready for the second hand market.

The Phantom Saga is taking a break until I can get hold of some more spare parts. Stay tuned, but please don't hold your breath.

RE: My Phantom voyage - ragwo - 03-Oct-2024

Quick update; both speakers are sold, so I'm ready for new Phantom adventures. Hopefully a banged up Phantom II will emerge. Looking forward to chisel away on a delicate SOTA speaker.

RE: My Phantom voyage - Gamma - 07-Mar-2025

Hello, I was shocked by the price of the Devialet theater system. I'm very interested in your plan, may I ask:
1. How is the 4.0 surround effect?
2. Can you explain how to connect it and how to set it up in the Devialet app?

I set up the speakers as two pairs L-R front and back. The surround prosessor is sending front L-R to one AD-converter, back L-R to the other. The AD-converters are sending the signal via Toslink to Phantom front and back. Set the volume to approximately 80% on both pairs of Phantom and use the surround preamp as volume control. Voilà; cheapo(ish) surround setup. Workes as a charm!
