Stream using a newer iPhone or iPad model. Use Airplay 2, not Bluetooth. Use no other hardware in between. See if you hear a difference.

So I tried it again last night. And I did hear a difference this time. Not sure what I did differently. I used the AppleTV again. For the most part I was pleasantly surprised. There were some songs that I felt sounded harsher than their 2 channel versions.

Spatial audio on airpod max sound amazing on the new Apple TVos15. I really hope Devialet allows the option to switch on spatial audio so it can sound more theater-like than the headphones

Another severe case of the placebo effect ! I have tried with Apple Music and airplay 2 or optical connection on my Phantoms gold (Norah Jones or Diana Krall in the "Spatial audio" playlist): strictly no difference.
The official Devialet site says the Phantoms are not compatible with Dolby atmos or DTS:

Si vous souhaitez utiliser Phantom avec votre télévision, voici quelques informations importantes à connaitre :
- La grande majorité des TV jouent en Dolby ou un autre format propriétaire de manière automatique dès qu'un signal dans ce format lui est envoyé. Chez Devialet nous ne considérons pas ce format comme suffisamment qualitatif, c'est pourquoi Phantom ne sait pas traduire ce format lorsqu'il le reçoit et est donc incompatible avec le Dolby, DTS, Surround ou Dolby Atmos. Nous vous recommandons donc de modifier les paramètres de votre TV afin qu'elle n'utilise pas ce format, et qu'elle permette à votre Phantom de jouer l'ensemble des sons qui lui sont présentés. Le format recommandé dans ce cas est le format PCM, qui est le format le plus standard et le plus fonctionnel du marché. Pour trouver cette option sur votre téléviseur, veuillez consulter les informations du fabricant de votre télévision
Three years later, I am updating this old thread for those who are interested in enjoying a Dolby Atmos experience with a set of Phantoms, with no subwoffer needed.
It is possible now, mixing several Phantom I and II speakers in a combination of 5, 7 or 9 speakers, named from Devialet as Phantom Theater 5, 7 and 9.
Devialet confirms that the system is Dobly-compliant.
