New update with regards to my bottoming out bass!
I couldn't really get around why my system suddenly would be more sensitive now with better SAM and promised elevated output of low frequencies. I had the wrong output phase so I went from + to - and voila, deep bass without clipping and bottoming out and I can play loud!

They included the manual pdf file in the 8.1 firmware which I hadn't seen before. Not sure which extra file is getting deleted though (18 -> 15 as opposed to 17 -> 15 previously).

the manual file does not belong to the firmware files, you don't need to copy it to the SD card.
I did some intensive listening on the weekend between 7.1.3 and 8.1. The difference is very very small. I would still prefer 7.1.3 maybe, but I finally decided to go with 8.1 because of ICM, cooler operation and DSD capability. The difference in SQ is not worth to go back.
btw., I'm not using SAM anymore.

How much cooler did it run with 8.1?
Does 7.1.3 run hotter than 7.1.1?

Why back to 7.1.3 Pim? What do you think was missing from 8.1?

I downloaded 8.1 and uploaded to my SD card, but it still reads 8.0.0 May 12 2015, what gives?

Odd, my one is definitely showing 8.1.0.
Did it definitely update the firmware? There's a manual pdf in the firmware contents but stick the firmware files in the top level of the SD card (not sub folder) and either remove and replace power cord or hold power button from 'off' position until the reset counter appears and let it count down & it should start the upgrade which takes about 5 minutes.
Apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick and it actually has updated and showing the wrong version! If so try the update again. You will have to extract the firmware update zipfile back onto the card as it deletes a couple of files to prevent repeated update.

Thanks. Yes I did it wrong. I had to remove the power cord for it to start the updating process.
Odd that I did not have to unplug in previous upgrades.
