I did not mess around with phase and stuck with the default setting of "+". Imaging within the soundstage is rock-solid, which indicates correct phasing. Unfortunately for me, my speakers (Gemme Audio Tanto Karbon V3s) are not presently in the SAM database. I did not even activate SAM. After a day of listening to 8.1.3, the official released version, I reverted back to 7.1.3. I am now fully convinced that 7.1.3 is still the best sounding FW. The sound is more organic and musical. It has that X-factor that you can't fully described, but becomes obvious when the music is playing. It has that ethereal and mellifluous quality that is so pleasurable and titillating to listen to. The series 8 FWs (all of them) sound clinical and hifi-ish in comparison. The Phase + or - is meant to be used on album by album or even track by track while you play, not as a permanent setting. On my 250 remote the button is labelled 'Invert'. On the new remote it is 'Tone'. I assign phase invert to this button and use it a lot RE: New firmware 8.1.3 - aisip - 29-Jul-2015 (29-Jul-2015, 06:56)ogs Wrote:(28-Jul-2015, 07:42)brownzen Wrote: And what would be your advice for the Phase : + or - ? You are absolutely right Org. So far, I haven't encountered a track or album that I think is out-of-phase (telltale signs: cavernous sound; instrument or singer is not planted solidly within the soundstage - everything sounds like it is all over the place). I guess I need to play with and use this feature more often. I've been too caught up just enjoying the music. Haven't thought about the aspect of phase correctness before. Have you any knowledge of the recording path, from the microphone to the digital storage device? Mixing consoles do have a phase invert button to correct false cableing or multi microphone per instrument phase shifts, but my experience with noticeable phase corrections were only between left and right channel. The phase parameter in the expert menu is, as far as I noticed inverting the phase of both channels, isn't it? I will have to check this out tonight with some songs. Cheers, Krisp RE: New firmware 8.1.3 - bernardl - 29-Jul-2015 Since my Wilson Benesch Vector have just been SAMed, I gave 8.1.3 another try earlier today. It's now even better than without SAM. The bass is much more refined, but the medium and high seem to benefit also. Truly outstanding sound my friends! Maybe it will be truly amazing sound RE: New firmware 8.1.3 - canyelles - 29-Jul-2015 [quote pid='21903' dateline='1438165953'] (29-Jul-2015, 06:56)ogs Wrote:(28-Jul-2015, 07:42)brownzen Wrote: And what would be your advice for the Phase : + or - ? The effects you are talking about happen when ONE speaker is wired incorrectly, i.e. 1 speaker is in positive phase and one is in negative phase. This is a gross error which is usually obvious. What the Devialet phase button does is change BOTH speakers to either positive or negative phase (assuming you had them set up correctly in the first place). This is a much more subtle effect. Personally I cannot distinguish between positive and negative phase. It's now even better than without SAM. Guillaume was kind enough to send me a copy of his 8.1.3 'beta' last week. (Thanks G.!) In my opinion, 8.1.3 beta is far superior to the official 8.1.3 release as well as my previous long term (in Devialet time) reference 7.1.3. I find my Jamo R909s sound a little boomy on both 8.1.3 versions with full SAM, but dialing back SAM a little to 80 or 90% seems to deal with the problem. Overall the sound of 8.1.3 beta is the best release of all since I started listening to my Devialets starting with FW 7.1.1. My system is now very revealing with the addition of Valhalla 2 speaker cables and the difference between 7.1.3 and 8.1.3 beta is easily heard. Compared to 8.1.3 and even 7.1.3, 8.1.3 beta is more detailed and has more top end extension while still being more musical. On my setup, one other anomaly is the apparent increase in right channel strength with both 8.1.3s, I have to adjust the balance 6% to the left to centre the image. With 7.1.3, I had to adjust 4% to the right to achieve the same imaging. Very Strange. One can only hope that 8.1.X will come around to 8.1.3 beta in terms of sound quality. I don't want to be left behind in terms of firmware development, but for me it's musicfirst RE: New firmware 8.1.3 - ogs - 29-Jul-2015 (29-Jul-2015, 11:57)Krisp Wrote:(29-Jul-2015, 06:56)ogs Wrote:(28-Jul-2015, 07:42)brownzen Wrote: And what would be your advice for the Phase : + or - ? Yes, you flip absolute phase, so both channels at the same time. I just listen for what sounds "best" to me. It is not always easy to hear the difference. In general this is a subtle change, but if you feel a thin veil has been removed you're probably on the right setting. |
