RE: New firmware 8.1.3 - Ants - 30-Jul-2015 After using 7.1.3 for a few days, I swapped to 8.1.3 (beta) and believe that there is more bite, slighter better bass and clearer highs. Just spent a few hours listening to everything from Goldfrapp, Melanie De Basio, Air and Shelby Lynne and feel its just more involving than 7.1.3. I used the same configuration file with no DPM and no SAM (my speakers are not SAM friendly). Going to stick with this for a while and might try swapping for the official 8.1.3 to compare next week. I have found problems like this myself. The rumour about amused Devialet people is a good one, maybe more of a fact It's like engineers fixing the headrest of a car, and the customers claim that the car is driving better (or worse) and faster than ever. I am sure Devialet's engineers are simply stunned and laughing about "audiophilia nervosa". I have found problems like this myself. I'd say this rumor is worrying. If the engineers at Devialet can not hear the difference between, for example, 7.1.3 and other versions it is a problem. Then we can not rely on Devialet to create a specific quality in a newer firmware if they wanted to, simply because they can not hear it and hence do not know what created the difference.. This explains some things at least for my speakers I sent an email yesterday to Devialet support: Dear Sir, I see that recently you have added SAM feature for my speakers and I thank you for this. By observing the sound pressure diagrams (http://fr.devialet.com/enceintes/atc/atc-scm-40) I notice that the diagrams are almost identical. When I observe sound pressure diagrams of other manufacturer speakers with SAM in the list I notice big difference between sound diagrams without SAM (before) and with SAM (after).Just out of curiosity what does that mean? Are my speakers that good or the benefit of SAM to them is negligible? Kind Regards and the answer today: Devialet Support (Devialet) Dear Sir, Thank you for your message. We reached out for Maxime, our SAM engineer who toured in Asia last month with his SAM LAB, and did the SAM profile for the ATC SCM 40. He clearly remembered the ATC SCM40 and he stated that it is an impressive loudspeaker. The performance were already good without SAM, and with SAM it became one of his personal favourite. However, please note that while the sound pressure curves can give an idea about loudspeaker performance, it is not an absolute criterion on which one can compare one loudspeaker to the other. Best regards RE: New firmware 8.1.3 - Manoet - 30-Jul-2015 Then they must be hysterical about my complaints of slathering the floors, walls & ceilings with magnetic & thermally inefficient 'bling' while simultaneously coating all binding posts and inputs/outputs with magnetic material which is fine with me... their future's riding on it, not mine! RE: New firmware 8.1.3 - Rufus McDufus - 30-Jul-2015 flyer - you got a decent reply there! I logged a ticket a few days ago saying SAM for my Raidho C-1.1 has been rather unimpressive since the 8.x firmware came out and the reply basically was that no-one else has reported any problems, and because SAM v2 is better (the speakers were done when SAM was v1) then they will sound better than with firmware 7.x. Also SAM v2 adds protection to the speakers. Well hang on, I though SAM v1 did that too? And is SAM v2 better sound quality? It's now marginal with my speakers whether SAM is actually adding anything positive and I'm listening more and more with it off, and only 0% SAM if I have it turned on. Anyhow going back to firmware, Linn and their DS have the same shenanigans each time a new firmware comes out and have done since they brought the products came out quite a few years ago. I have to admit I found most of the Linn firmware sound quality differences more subtle than the Devialet ones, but still many people swore blind there were differences and Linn denied any possibility of it, though occasionally an engineer would sheepishly confess they could hear a difference. Interestingly Linn DS is built on a similar platform to Devialet with FPGAs where it's possible to change the circuit topology of the processor so there's an added layer of complexity over a standard processor there. The 8.1.3 beta and 8.1.3 official is a good example I think. I confess I'm a fruitloop and loving 8.1.3 beta but 8.1.3 official is giving nothing extra to me over 8.1.2. Plus it is quite possible that NickB has been at the Cider again ......... RE: New firmware 8.1.3 - Antoine - 30-Jul-2015 Please...I think he just made that "little rumour" up to get under our skin. edit: it seems Confused beat me to it, just mere seconds! |
