AIR works perfect with the NIGHTHAWK X6. - Waterside - 04-Aug-2015

Hello.

I am not a big poster on forums but I have used this one for information so thought only fair that I shared this information.

I am an engineer and I was attempting to use a BT HomeHub 5 for streaming QUBUZ wirelessly to a D-Premier from a Macbook.

Although I succeeded it was a total ball ache, and imho sounded not as good as what I think the Devialet is capable of.

My cd reference is a Cyrus cd xt se with pxr power supply and digital chord indigo interconnect.

So I bought a NETGEAR NIGHTHAWK X6 Tri-band router and separate modem.

Set it up on hifi rack & loaded it up.

It has three wireless bands. 2 x 5GHz and 1 x 2.4Ghz and 6 big antennas.

Checked over the 2.4Ghz interface & picked channel 6 instead of allowing router to automatically select and pressed apply.

Changed config SD card for new SSID in D-premier.

And it works. Absolutely perfect. I mean absolutely perfect.

The difference in sound quality from the Homehub 5 is quite startling!

It may be expensive for a router but its the cheapest piece of hifi equipment I have ever bought!

And just for reference I have tried the sonos connect, SB Touch & Mtech Hiface with expensive cables with less than satisfactory results.

So before buying that outrageously expensive streamer have a look at this router and get Qubuz account.

I've been doing hifi for 25 years and the AIR wireless route is the best I have experienced.

The technology at home has not been up to the technology in the devialet but I think its now caught up.

Enjoy the music

Peace

well, I simply changed my wifi setup and AIR works 100% as well. I use a new Apple Aiport Extreme.

No matter what Router or access point I used it worked after realizing something.

I guess (hope I am right) the solution is to put the Wifi-Access-point as close as possible to the Devialet and the Audio-Server/PC.
I also defined a dedicated wifi network (e.g. devi-net) only for audio, which is connect to the other wifi networks in my house and to the Internet of course (Tidal).
With a signal strength better than -40 db (RSSI), it worked ( I have now -21 db, that is perfect!) with every router/access point without any problems. Even with 192 KHZ files....

Combined with my Roon Server (Surface 3 Pro) close to the Access-Point, I use my Ipad as a remote (having -27DB signal strenght here as well) it works smooth as it can get....

Glad to hear that it works for you.  But you can't generalise from your experience to conclude that using that router will make it work faultlessly for everyone (which is what your post seems to be doing).

RE: AIR works perfect with the NIGHTHAWK X6. - Confused - 06-Aug-2015

A question for the IT wizards.......

I note that routers like this include a fair bit of processing power & memory, e.g. dual core 1GHz processor, 256MB RAM . So apart for the obvious improvement in wifi performance, could they actually be doing anything else that might improve the performance of AIR, even if connected by hard wired Ethernet?

I would say no as most of this computing power is for VPN and other specialist functions like that.

(06-Aug-2015, 22:20)Actually i disagree. There is a marked improvement in picture and sound on my panasonic vt55 tv set and oppo 105 too. There is a serious improvement in sound from the devialet. I was unable to process packet data efficiently previously with old hub. Back in the day I built radio aerials for fm radios and the difference in sound was never questioned as obvious. Wifi is just a radio frequency. This router transmits stronger signals. The advantages of going wireless to the devialet is well documented by devialet so won\t bore you with materials used etc. I am listening to old recordings and utterly bewitched by detail and soundstage. Ive been a high end cable supporter all my life and no cable is better? Utterly stunned! Wrote:

If you have the router right next to hi-fi equipment, then why don't you just plug the ethernet cable directly into the Devialet? Is there a difference in sound between Wi-Fi and cabled ethernet?

Good question, I read the spec about Air, and they have a strange diagramm where ethernet and wifi are "used" be used at the same time.
my surface tablet and my devi are connected both ways (wifi+ ethernet) and it works 100%. It makes no sense from my (software engineer) point of view, but it works. Thats all i can tell...

+1 I am using both ethernet an wifi between my Apple time capsule and the D200 and there is no difference in SQ for me.

Same set up as me ,but why dont you isolate the e.g. devi-net ? i see that you connect it to the other wifi networks
Just ask since it was recommended earlier
