Neffa,

Bryston just introduced the BDP-1USB:

There's also the Auraliti PK-90:

The look of Bryston gear always takes me back to the 80s for some reason.

I definitely think a dedicated pc is the way to go if using air, an intel nuc box can come in not much over £200 including windows so cheap enough in the scheme of things.

In my case the family would never listen for a long time so white noise would be unlikely based on my experience.

It's not like any of the other streaming options have been foolproof from the beginning, maybe Sonos is the exception.

Cheers

Chris

Interesting. I guess the desirability of these depends very much on usability, the quality of iPad control etc. Running USB to an asynchronous dac, they are probably going to sound much the same as AIR / Ethernet from a PC?
One point to note, the Auraliti does not appear to support ALAC, which for me would mean re-ripping many hundreds of cd's, which would be a little dull.

I have the same problem with Kim Basinger Angel

You could use XLD to batch convert your ALAC files to AIFF. I don't know how many you have but it probably shouldn't take too long Smile

A good point, sounds obvious but not something I'd thought of to be honest. Would there be any loss of sound quality vs re-ripping to FLAC or WAV? I wouldn't mind how long it takes, if you can set it going, then go to work, go for a beer & curry, go to bed etc, it wouldn't really matter. (Although about 9000 files, for what it's worth)

I transcoded a couple of hundred albums from FLAC (zero compression) to AIFF when I wanted to try iTunes AIR on my iMac and it didn't take long at all. I did it in 3 or 4 batches because I found that I wanted to listen to more and more albums Smile so I'm not sure how long it really took. It's really just down to processor speed and how many cores your machine has.

The funny thing is AIR apparently converts everything to WAV anyway so I guess ease of tagging + your music library manager should be the main determinants of the coding you use.

I couldn't detect any loss in sound quality at all Smile

I use a Auraliti PK 90 w/linear psu connected via Ethernet to my NAS,
and USB to an asynchronous DAC.

Easy to control with the MPad app on my iPad and sound quality is on par with my other digital source a PS Audio PWT.

Interesting, have you ever compared to AIR?
