Who has actually heard one? If the manufacture or someone close to the manufacture has said this, then I'm not surprised. After all, they are not going to announce that it "sounds a bit disappointing" or similar, at this stage.
Maybe it will be a giant killer, there is no reason why not. However, we will need to wait until it gets into the hands of the general public for some unbiased testing, until then it's pure speculation.
Having said that, I'm currently considering buying a streamer, and I must admit I will be a bit reluctant to part with my cash until it becomes clear just how good the microRendu really is.

If you try to buy it you get back a notice in the checkout that they are sold out....

Confusing! If you look at the website per the link it states "Coming Soon" at the bottom of the page, so I presume that they are not taking pre-orders and it's not available yet, or maybe they were and the first batch has sold out already?

It's not available yet. They're just setting up ready from what I've read. Bit silly to put it live though.....
Those already subscribed to the (very inactive) mailing list will be contacted when it's available and have the option of buying it before everyone else. Apparently. They're also considering Amazon a bit down the line to make it easier for non-US buyers.

While we wait for the microRendu to become available, I would appreciate a little clarity about how the device would actually be used in a typical system.
My understanding is that it will act a Roon 'endpoint", so will need a PC (or Mac / Laptop etc) connected via Ethernet to act as the Roon server. (please correct me if I've misunderstood this)
But would it also work in much the same way as AIR does with a PC? That is, could you run iTunes, JRiver, YouTube, internet radio or whatever on the said PC, Ethernet connected to a microRendu, to get decent quality stable (TBC) sound, in what is a kind of a twin PC (PC + Renderer) set up?

Your understanding's right re the endpoint bit.
No to the other, not unless you can do it via one of the protocols they provide (I don't know much about the others), or they add a generic one like Openhome or something, or you can find a way to route all audio out to one of the supported apps.
This is what they support at launch
SELECTABLE OUTPUT MODES
Mode #1 - SqueezeLite Output - This output works with any Logitech Media Server and compatible controllers. This output supports true gapless playback of PCM and DSD/DoP.
Mode #2 - ShairPort Output - This is an AirPlay emulator that utilizes streams sent to it from a compatible source. This output supports true gapless playback of PCM.
Mode #3 - MPD/DLNA Output:
Mode #3a - DLNA Output - This output utilizes streams from UPNP/DLNA servers and controllers. This output can be configured as an OpenHome renderer. This output supports true gapless playback of PCM, DSD/DoP, and native DSD.
Mode #3b - MPD Output - This output is intended to work with a SMB mount. This output supports true gapless playback of PCM, DSD/DoP, and native DSD.
Mode #4 - HQ Player NAA Output - This output utilizes streams from Signalyst's HQ Player running on your computer. Digital signal processing is performed by HQ Player and then asynchronously streamed to the Network Audio Adapter (NAA) output. This output supports true gapless playback of PCM, DSD/DoP, and native DSD.

Yes, I noticed the mode list on their website. Where my understanding lacks is in how, in practical terms, the various mode #3 options can be used.
