RE: AIR 3 beta for Windows - Confused - 13-Sep-2016

I can accept the vinyl type pops as it seems that issue is resolved in the next increment of the software. My question is; I've been considering a Melco in place of my Nu Force MSR-1 music server (PC running Win 10 and J Rivers 22), I see that many contributors here have the Melco N1A but I'm not sure if I can use it with J Rivers - i.e. control with J Rivers, store music files on the Melco and connect via USB / ethernet to the Devialet. Can I still connect using AIR if I have the Melco (I think the answer might be NO).
If not, then I guess I've saved £1700 as the music sounds really quite good using AIR but I would appreciate the general advice of the forum.

Thanks,
Paul

The way I look at it, there are two aspects to streamers and music servers.  One is sound quality, the other is functionality.  For many the Melco is a superb solution, that is for those that want to take the computer out of the mix and have the music stored on one simple device that can also stream with decent quality to the Devialet.  However, for someone like yourself, who appears to prefer using a PC and JRiver, I would be tempted to consider a microRendu + Mutec MC3+USB combination.  This is less cash than a Melco N1A, offers great versatility and functionality, and in my view it performs as well, or better, that some far more expensive music servers.  The microRendu is ideal if you want your PC to be remote from the system, connected via Ethernet.  Alternatively, you could try just the PC outputting via USB into a Mutec.  And no, you cannot run a Melco via AIR Ethernet.  The AIR app is available for Windows and Mac only, so cannot be loaded onto a Melco.  So Melco, USB, Devialet is your only option.  I am a huge fan of AIR in terms of it's sound quality and tremendous versatility, however, in my system the microRendu +Mutec MC3+USB combination is clearly better.

Edit. I have just googled Nu Force MSR-1. I hadn't fully appreciated what this is. I'm suspect running this via a Mutec MC3+USB would work rather well.

Thank you Confused for your considered reply. I also jumped on Google to investigate the Mutec MC-3 USB. It looks like a versatile interface and, from the pictures, I imagine that I connect to it via USB and then I can use AES/EBU to the Devialet. I, like most tweakers I think, have a cupboard full of cables that I can play with to find the best combination. I will look for a supplier and a price.
Cheers,
Paul

You are welcome!  Regarding the Mutec, there is lots to read on 'Computer Audiophile', as well as on other threads here.  Might be worth checking out.

Hello Confused,

Thank you for the advice. I now have my Mutec MC-3 USB and have run it for a couple of days. Today I ran comparisons, USB/Intona vs AIR 3 vs Mutec. As you suggested, the Mutec won on clarity, soundstage and space.
Whilst slightly off topic I would have to say that, for no added cost the performance of AIR 3 is pretty hard to beat, the audiophile law of diminishing returns holds true that you can get small improvements by throwing money at the problem but, when finally released, AIR 3 will be a great addition to the Devialet armoury.

Cheers,
Paul

Second week of October has come to an end. Must be some issues delaying the release of the RC.

Yes sir, it seems no resources are working on it right now...

RE: AIR 3 beta for Windows - Jeffaz - 16-Oct-2016

I've just installed Air 3.0 beta on a Intel Stick Computer running Windows 10 Home. It worked fine with Foobar 1.3.12, streaming FLAC content to my Expert 200.

AIR 3.0.1 running on a 1000 Pro?  I don't think anyone will top that tonight! Shy
