Devialet200 Headphone Amplifier connection through Magic Wire Dac - CongoFather - 01-Sep-2017

Hi,
As far as I know, when pre-out output is used, a different mid-fi Dac, WM8740, is used and output power is limited to 4Vrms per channel.

I have heard (the source of the information may be incorrect, if so, please correct me) that analog signal produced by MagicWire DAC  can also be used and sent to an external headphone amplifier for optimum performance. By this way, as the main DAC is used instead of WM8740, the quality of sound is expected to be much better.

Did anyone try that? How did you make the configuration using Advanced Configurator(except ore-out)?

I would also like to know more about this.   I'm currently using the PreOuts as input to my Senn 650s.   Sounds OK but has me thinking about buying a separate headphone dac/amp.    I hadn't heard that the Devialet Preouts were not using the MagicWire DAC, but that might explain why headphone listening via the Devialet doesn't impress me as much as I was expecting.

P.S... I'm using a 440 Pro - not sure if that handles Preouts differently.

Hi. I'd like to follow this up also, the PreOuts used with my HD800S are not the best solution yet, much prefer my Oppo HA-1 for the moment.

Normaly the maximum input line level of any amplifier is 4 or 5 Volts, although the normal level is 2 volt.  If you say to connect directly the Devialet output  speaker to input headphone amp,  , I think it is not a good idea, even if it goes down to the minimum (30 w) the exit of the Devialet I think would be dangerous. What if I could (I've tried, but in the end I never did) is to connect the headphones directly to the speaker output, for this you only need an impedance adapter box. HIFIMAN has one for its Hifiman HE-6 and other  low efficiency Hifi headphones. I have a 200 ohm LCD-4 that I think would work great with this adapter,  even directly ( I ask the Devialet support) and they told me that Devialet hardware is prepared to work with those impedances, but they strongly urged me to lower the output (30w) to the minimum and start with the volume to the minimum before try.

Anyway the DAC integrated into the headphone amplifier itself will give you maximum performance, I tell you why I have a Moon 430HAD with a built-in  ESS Sabre 9018K2M chip and sounds much better than with the line input from the Devialet Pre Out Wolfson.

Lcd4 is also a high impedance headphone with 200ohm value. What if I try to use Fostex TH900 with only 25 ohm value? Should I change the impedance adaptor so that the headphone is not damaged..

How is the calculation done to match the headphone impedance with speaker output impedance using a specifi impedance adapter.

In my case, I will use Devialet200 and 25 ohm Fostex th900..

It´s a pity, that it is not possible to configure the two AES/EBU in a dual-mono setup as an analog XLR-Stereo-Out like the RCA of the compenion... Dodgy
