Is this the patent application you're referring to?

http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/20140003619

It definitely is something new and refers to wirelessly connecting audio processing units (over zigbee) with microphones and spatial awareness.

It's heavy on patent language so hard to tell what's going on here but very interesting.

Yes, I already chewed through it once after PhilP shared it: http://devialetchat.com/Thread-Devialet-s-newest-technology?pid=5601#pid5601

Phantom - Definition.......

A figment of the imagination
Something that is not real and exists only in a person's mind

Perhaps the original French meaning is lost in translation?

The name/word Phantom together with the statement "#RIP speakers, stereos, dockstations, home cinema… Open your ears. I will implode everything on Dec.16th " is something I interpret it as a product that 'you can't see but is there', as in a highly integrated solution rendering bulky electronics, cables, loudspeakers etc. redundant. Smile

RIP
Speakers, stereos, dockstations, home cinema…

RIP Speakers? A bit of a waste of time doing all those SAM profiles then?

I think it's for a different crowd than us "audiophile freaks", this might be the reason they have not yet tied the Devialet name to it (of course I don't know if they will in the future).

But they have, I guess somewhat indirectly, through their Facebook page.

It may be something to supplement a traditional 2 ch system but I think you're right and it's likely geared toward home theater or multi room

This makes sence, with the investment in SAM etc. is would appear to be safe to assume that the basic Devialet amplifier arcitecture will remain for some time. So what is the new product? Some kind of Sonos killer would be my guess.

"Phantom center refers to the way human ears detect the location of a sound; straight ahead, above, or behind the head. Since humans have one ear on each side of the head, sound in aforementioned locations creates an equal sensation in each ear. Thus, based only on hearing, the sound can be determined to be in one of said locations, as opposed as to the left, or to the right. In stereo mixing of sound a phantom center is often created, by the use of panning. Even though there is no center speaker, vocals could appear to come from precisely between the two speakers. In surround sound, vocals are often mapped to the center channel, eliminating the need to create a phantom center using the left and right channels."

From the patent:

"In one such embodiment in particular, the audio processing device may be an external removable device such as an iPod or iPhone, which has the necessary detection devices, antenna and microphone and is commanded by a software application, which may for example be downloadable. The processing operations described above and done by the microprocessor 5 to carry out the invention so as to adapt the audio signals played by the different loudspeakers are then defined by software instructions of the application."
