Remote Vinyl Streaming - ogs - 23-Jul-2018

Just to link to a new device that promises High End vinyl streaming http://www.transvinyl.com/index_en.html
I know little about device other than what is found on their web site. For those who connect a record player directly to their Experts it is probably of little use, but I'd guess it is possible to use with Roon. Then you can run the stream through the convolver or distribute sound to other Roon zones. As it supports UPnP Phantom/Dialog would also be a  possibility.

A little bit more information. The start price is €3000 in black or alu finish (according to a post made on the Roon forum) implying that other colours are available at added cost. The streaming part is based on Linux and updates should be a simple menu choice provided the unit has internet connectivity. There is a test of the unit in the current issue of Stereoplay (in German). Even if the price is rather high it is an exiting device and it seems aimed at those who demand good audio quality.

Interested in knowing more. Thanks

This is a bit of a strange product category given that most modern albums originate as digital files.

Here's a bit of an analogy:

The old:

The recording is made on analog tape and transferred to LP, which gets played on an analog record player.

The new:

A recording is made in a digital format and gets streamed or downloaded in a digital format and sent to a DAC for digital to analog conversion.

The weird:

The recording is made in a digital format. It then gets converted to analog to be cut into an LP. The LP then gets played on an analog record player, converted to digital, streamed to a DAC and converted back to analog. All this has comes with some loss of quality for sure but it makes us feel good because we enjoy putting a needle on an LP.

Here's an example of something similar. See if it makes sense to you:

The old:

A boy likes a girl. He writes her a love letter on paper, puts it in the mail and it gets delivered by the mail man. She opens the envelope and reads the letter. Everybody happy.

The new:

A boy likes a girl. He writes her a love letter in an email. He sends it to her and she receives it immediately. She reads it right away. Everybody happy.

The weird:

A boy likes a girl. He writes her a love letter in an email but instead of sending the email to her, he sends it to a someone who writes his letter word for word on paper and then sends it by mail. The girl receives the letter, scans it with specialised software that can read the letter and type it onto an email. She then emails it to herself so she can read it on her phone. There's a chance both the letter writer and the reading software have made mistakes so the content is likely not the same as the original email but the girl feels good about it because she likes the feeling of opening an envelope.

Am I missing something?

Hi Pim
in my case my vinyl collection is 'old' so there is quite a lot of AAA there (to use a modern day acronym) Many albums are available in digital, but I did not buy too many of those. Of the few I bought there are some with bad transfer to digital so I'd like to be able to play the vinyl. I do not subscribe to Tidal (or Qobuz) so I do not have access to the large libraries of digital transfers. And most of that is only redbook anyway.

That is interesting. Are there any reviews?

Yes, the PDF was sent to me as an email attachment. From Stereoplay in German..

I get it. That's a solid reason to buy one of these so clearly there is a market. The alternative for you would be digitising all your albums via the Devialet USB port. That's a big job though.

Must say I don’t really understand the use case for this.
Given that there are many other phono stages out there that digitise the signal it seems awfully expensive

There are many phono/AD combinations in the market that can digitise the signal, but these can not put a live stream to Roon. Roon does not have an input for a USB or SPDIF signal. The only way at the moment is to connect to an internet radio instance to receive a stream. The Trans Vinyl unit can act as a radio station.
JRiver has a device for this kind of input, but that requires the server to be close to the source. Rumour has it that this is somewhat unstable...
I am a Roon user so I do not want to go back to JRiver. Take a look at this thread at the Roon forum: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/can-a-local-server-stream-flac-to-roon/42373
