Direct Optical mode - How to - alandbush - 26-Sep-2018 With a slowly growing interest in using this ‘hidden’ mode, I thought it useful to create a thread that will be, hopefully, easier to find than the other various posts scattered across numerous threads. First, an acknowledgement for @thumb5, who initially piqued my interest in this mode, following his excellent OAC meeting questions and answers post. Also, thanks to Mei (Devialet Customer Care) and Eric Gaillard (Devialet Integration professional) who provided further clarification of the procedure. And finally, the procedure to be performed for a single Phantom
For those of a nervous disposition, exiting Direct Optical mode is as follows:
Update 1st October 2018 Finally found the time and inclination to perform measurements of a Phantom Gold in ‘normal’ mode and Direct Optical mode, ostensibly to determine the latency difference. REW was used for the measurements utilising the timing reference option. One speaker in Direct Optical mode was designated as the timing reference and the other was switched between the two modes. Five measurements were taken for each mode and the delay values were within 0.01ms of each other. The result, i.e. the difference between the two modes was 176ms. Screenshots from the Devialet Phantom Remote app follow. One dumb question though..... If 0dB is 100% volume and obviously -12dB is some volume less than 100%, do you know what +12dB does? RE: Direct Optical mode - How to - pscampbe - 27-Sep-2018 Thanks so much for this - interesting - so it's not different firmware, just a different mode. What does the 'motion design' mode do? RE: Direct Optical mode - How to - Jean-Claude - 27-Sep-2018 IOS means Apple on a mobile. Then I guess that I can't use this mode with my Mcbook. RE: Direct Optical mode - How to - ogs - 27-Sep-2018 No, you'd have to borrow an iPhone. I only have Android devices so I'd have the same problem... I don't own Phantoms (yet), but it is very nice to see that the latency problem is finally solved! I'll decide if I will buy Phantoms when Devialet makes them Roon RAAT ready and deliver a firmware with time correction. It’s not a dumb question at all but a matter of interpretation. My understanding is that audio compression occurs, particularly in the lower frequencies, as the volume increases beyond, I think, the Spark 85 indicator. So, we could infer from that, the Spark 85 is equivalent to Direct Optical mode of 0dB. What does the 'motion design' mode do? It moves the woofers without them making a sound! RE: Direct Optical mode - How to - boosting1bar - 29-Sep-2018 Thanks for sharing this. I wonder if there is any way to put the dialog into a more direct (at least less processing lag) mode so that it could accept a stereo signal a pair of Phantoms? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk RE: Direct Optical mode - How to - ogs - 01-Oct-2018 You have obviously never worked in PR or as a sales person... the only purpose is to impress someone so much that they impulse buy a Phantom when they see it! No function, just a trick... |
