The D220 is a superb amplifier. Really-really. There are many outstanding products to be sure, but the D220 belongs in the group at the top. I know that the common wisdom is to spend the bulk of your budget on speakers, and I can get behind that advice. Still, I'd change everything else in the system before moving away from the Devialet. There are a few things to get used to, and the configuration settings and process can take some practice, but once it is set, you don't need to fuss with it very often.
But back to your topic, I think your solution is excellent. One cool thing about this is that the Dev can be configured to go to sleep after a certain period of inactivity. So, just let the music stop, and it goes back to idle on its own. Really a great feature in our house.
