Best router for Phantom? - Eggman - 11-May-2021

I’ve had terrible experiences trying to use stereo paired Phantom Golds with mesh networks. So far Eero and Google Nest have been non-functional, presumably because they keep switching between 2.4 and 5 GHz. What is the best router (US only) that would allow me to assign the 5 GHz frequency to the Phantoms? Appreciate any and all suggestions.

While I can’t offer any idea of why you are having issues, I do wish to chime in and say not “all” issues are due to eero mesh. I have had my Silver Phantoms on my eero mesh network for almost five years and they work fine.

Eero has a setting in their “Eero Labs” section in their app to allow “band steering” which may help you. Let me know if you need help. My Reactors work fine.

Sorry, it’s now out of beta:

Settings >> Network Settings >> Wifi >> Band steering

Thanks for the info! I’m away on business for a while, but when I return home I’ll give it a try.

If you can, also set a static IP address for your Phantoms. Early days I had issues, once set to static all became more stable....

Also worth noting you probably want the phantoms on 2.4 not 5ghz…. 2.4 is more robust and can travel farther through more materials then 5ghz.

I tend to think of 5ghz network speeds as only attainable when in the same room as the router.

That being said I prefer wired to wireless when possible as it easily eliminates all wireless issues, I do have 3 phantoms that I use wireless on my network by forcing them to a 2.4 ghz network via the router. Some routers offer to split your 2.4 and 5ghz network names so you can easily join devices to one or the other which is very useful for smart homes…

Yup, fully agree.

Eero does this as well. I’d simply pick the one that works best, as network traffic can impact efficiency.

Make sure your Eeros are updated. I found a fair bit of difference between software updates.

I upgraded to Eero Pros about 6 months ago and that helped too. Between lots of devices in the house including Sonos everywhere, I probably overwhelmed the last setup. Not sure, but new devices helped.

Thanks for all the info, this is very helpful -- can I set a static IP address through the Eero app?

You can:
Settings >> Network Settings >> Reservations and Port Forwarding
