Removing bums on woofer or replacing parts? - 108paris - 14-Jul-2023

Hi all,

I have the Phantom I (108) and some bumps on one side - the woofer. See picture.

Is there a technique to remove them?

The bumps are in the small circle in the middle (which can be seen in the picture) and a minor one on the outer circle.

Happy to get some help.

I think the best solution is to let Devialet replace the woofer. As long as there's no sound deterioration I wouldn't bother fixing the dents.

I spoke with Devialet. It will cost about 350 Euro.

However, there is absolutely 0 sound deterioration. It is just a 100% cosmetic thing here.

Just thinking loud. Car specialists do often repair these kind of dents. It is a fairly simple and cheap procedure using a vacuum. Not sure if the affected surface area is too small for their tools. No promises though, it is not certified and could potentially destroy your Phantoms.

@seb

this is actually what i heard from a couple of audiophile friends actually. They suggested to contact luxury car sellers who correct micro bumps from cars.

i hope i will find cheap parts and let an expert do this. 350-550 euro is just too expansive for a plastic part.

It's not plastic, it's aluminium. The only way to find parts is to buy another faulty Phantom and use those parts. Devialet doesn't provide parts, nor does anybody else. If you try with vacuum, be careful not to rip the dust cap off, it's glued in place. I would not try to fix the dent just below the dust cap, you might damage the voice coil. If the voice coil gets uneven the woofer is ready for recycling. As I wrote earlier, I would leave it like it is. If you need detailed pictures and instructions on how to dismantle and reassemble a Phantom I, please see the link in my signature.

A vacuum wont help unfortunately.
Only do worse .you cant suck aluminum .
Even if punch it out youl see defect .
The only why itcan pop up is with boiled water .
