D120 pre-out no audio - thebiglebowski - 27-May-2025

I'm trying to use the preout on my Expert 120 but I'm getting no audio. Have tried various configs and nothing seems to work.

I've enabled the preout via the remote, tried using variable/fixed output levels but still nothing???

Apologies for possibly underestimating your technical knowledge but I just want to make sure you are understanding the pre-out function correctly and have everything hooked up the way that it should.

Pre-out means that the Devialet is no longer the amp driving the speakers. You therefore need an external power amp. The Devialet is now only the volume control and the music source. Power is handled by an external amp.

The connection path is therefore:

- Coax RCA cable in Devialet pre-outs connected to the coax RCA inputs on an external power amp.
- Speaker cables are connected to the power amp and then to the speakers.

If I look at your configurator picture, the only input that is active seems to be ethernet. I am assuming that your source is therefore Roon streaming over ethernet.

Also check:
- mute is not engaged
- ethernet Roon (RAAT) is selected as source on the Devialet
- the RCA cables are connected to the Devialets preouts and not inadvertently to the phono connectors (easy mistake to make)
- You have selected the single ended (RCA) input on your power amp (assuming it takes both single ended and balanced connectors and requires a manual switchover selection between the two)

Yep my playback path is

ROON >> RAAT >> D120 Ethernet

I have the rca cables connected to the coax sockets labelled as "Preout" in the screenshot

RCA cables are connected to a Fosi ZA3 amp which is then connected to some speakers I'm selling.

The intent was to demo these speakers without disconnecting the D120 speaker cables from my speakers as the D120 is wall mounted and the speaker cables are trunked to the wall.

I know the Fosi amp is good as I tried it at the weekend with an Innuos Zen Mini which has an internal DAC and analogue out (the Zen is now boxed up to post hence why I want to use the D120)

That's strange as with preout enabled it is still driving the speakers connected to the D120

For clarity:

ROON >> Ethernet >> D120 >> speaker cables >> Shahinian speakers

-----------------------------D120 >> Preout >> RCA cables >> Fosi ZA3 amp >> speaker cables >> sonus faber speakers

When enabling the preouts you obviously do so to use an external power amp. The Devialet's internal power amp remains active unless you disable it:

You can do this via the Advanced Speaker Settings in the Configurator:
  1. Go to the Configurator (via Devialet's website).
  2. Select your Expert Pro 120 configuration.
  3. Under Output Settings, choose to disable the internal amplifier for the relevant channel(s).
  4. Save and load the new configuration onto your SD card.

Everything sounds like it is connected properly.

I don't see an option for "output settings" but if that is the speaker output I don't have an option to disable the amplifier there either?

Only option I have is to set the 'preout' to on/off but it always defaults to off when I go back in to the setting

I sold my Devialet long ago and don't have configurator access any longer so I cannot check. A quick Google does seem to suggest that power amp disable might have been only available in an older firmware/configurator version and was since removed.
I also saw the below picture while Googling. The circled text points to even if sub/preout is activated in the line input configurator screen, it still needs to be enabled/disabled using the remote. So you may want to assign one of the remote buttons to preouts and see if that makes a difference?

I also searched this forum for "preout" and scanned the threads in the search results and saw these 2 posts:

Not all 120 have preout. Preout was only option.

Ah that's interesting, I was enabling the 'preout' via the remote but using the Tone > settings options to enable the preout.

I'll try assigning the preout to a remote button instead.

Well that doesn't work either
