MacMini via ethernet or optical to Gold - Mohmm - 30-Aug-2025 I play Roon core on my MacMini into Phantom Golds. They are connected via ethernet as well as via USB-Toslink glassfiber. My question: When I activate the Roon Ready connection in Roon, is the stream going via ethernet or Toslink? I want to play via Toslink, but I am not sure whether Roon uses this route when my audio on the Mini is set to Toslink. This only seems to work with a non-RoonReady connection. What would I loose in a non-RoonReady connection? Thanks. RE: MacMini via ethernet or optical to Gold - skizuki - 20-Sep-2025 toslink is always better than USB USB: USB connections can suffer from electromagnetic interference, which may degrade audio quality, especially in environments with many electronic devices. Additionally, connection issues like cable wear can hinder audio fidelity. Toslink: Being an optical medium, Toslink is more resilient to electromagnetic interference. This makes it ideal for setups where multiple electronic devices are in close proximity as it ensures a cleaner signal transfer. if you insist to use USB, buy an expensive noise shield USB cable, or noise eliminator (such as iFi). I know about the low quality of USB, but my source does not have an optical out. That's why I could only use Toslink with a USB interface. This combines a bad USB and the 'good' Toslink. So, I'll stay with Ethernet. RE: MacMini via ethernet or optical to Gold - Nickname - 20-Nov-2025 If you want to make sure what connection your phantom is using, you might be able to verify that on the Devialet app when the source is playing. RE: MacMini via ethernet or optical to Gold - tbb852 - 25-Nov-2025 If you obsess with cleaner quality, you can buy Mutec MC3+USB as a reclocker from USB to Optical. My setup: MacMini M2 > HQ player > Mutec MC3 > optical out > Phantom I duo / headphone amps |
