Sonore Streamers
A question, and I am not sure if it was asked and answered earlier in the thread as Ii could not go through it all.

Has anyone tried SonicTransporter i7 running roon server with direct Ethernet connection (using the built in bridge) to Devialet (i.e. skipping the need for a renderer like microRendu)? and if yes what was the sound like?

thanks

A video covering the upcoming opticalRendu, see link below.  One point to note, this video is by Chris Connaker of "Audiophile Style" (formally Computer Audiophile) and Sonore pay for a sponsored area on Audiophile Style.  Worth keeping in mind perhaps, but the video is quite good and well worth five minutes of your time if you are interested in the concept of the opticalRendu.

From what I have read, the price quoted in the video might be wrong, at the time of writing Sonore state that the final price is yet to be determined.

(Also note in the video, the TAD CR1's that @sam1000 declined to buy.  It's a small world.... Shy )

The opticalRendu can be used with this:

However, I believe a higher specification "Sonore opticalModule" SFP fiber optic transceiver is pending, details yet to be announced.

I am tempted I have to say, but not tempted enough to jump in early.  The early reports are interesting, so far they generally look very positive, although early reports usually are for Sonore products.

For me, I have never been 100% happy with the SOtM sMS-200Ultra, and the "Rendu" products offer exactly the functionality that I require, so trying an ultraRendu of any kind has long been an itch I would like to scratch, it is a shame that it is pretty much impossible to get this type of product to try as a demo.  I have occasionally had a look for second hand ultraRendu's for a decent price.  The idea is that I could try one, and then more or less get my money back on eBay if I did not like it.  The trouble is that they almost never appear for sale outside of the occasional one or two in North America.

I also wonder if the ultraRendu combined with the not yet released EtherRegen might be a better solution than the opticalRendu?  Plus, there might be a few secondhand ultrRendu's appearing on the market, being sold by those who have upgraded to the opticalRendu.

At the moment I have a whole list of things on my audio "to do" list, and no time to get them done.  So in the meantime, I am happy to simply follow the opticalRendu reports with interest and see how things develop. Shy

@Confused I can follow your reasoning. While personally not a ‘prospective buyer’ I do follow the release of products like these though I have some catching up to do on this one. I agree it’s probably wise to see if there’s some consensus coming from comparisons by others.

Regarding ultraRendu+etherREGEN vs. OpticalRendu John Swenson did mention he improved the opticalRendu (over the UR) in the power and clock networks so there is ‘more’ than just the optical fiber ethernet input but of course the OR does not have the new clock/phase noise filtering/isolation techniques of the etherREGEN.

I will do the same as you; follow the reports with interest and see how things develop. There’s movement on the NUC/server & AudiophileLinux/Euphony front as well so that’s where I’ll look first. Smile

An interesting new product has appeared from Sonore.  (if you can call it a product)  It is basically a high (ish) capacity microSD card that can be used for local storage of music files, as well as the normal function of holding the SonicOrbiter operating system.  In other words, this will turn a microRendu, ultraRendu or whatever into a mini music server.  Connected via Ethernet, you can use your PC / Mac to load the card up with 300gb or so of music.  Once that is done, you can play the music direct from the SD card, with control from a tablet.  If you subscribe to the idea that the simple approaches will sound better, then this is a pretty simple approach I think.  No need to worry about Ethernet cables, switches, computer noise etc, these are no longer in the audio path.

Price is $275 for 400GB card, which is very expensive for a 400GB microSD card, but a bit of a bargain if converting your 'Rendu to being a music server appeals, it depends on how you look at it.

I have to say that I am tempted to try one with my old mR.

I have been using a SonicTansporter for the past year and a half to service files to my Devialet pro 220 / core and am very pleased with it. It replaced my home windows pc, I had been using for that task and I noticed a significant improvement in audio quality with the change up.

Been a while now but as recall the biggest improvement was in the sound stage. Now keep in mind I am not one to site  in one place and listen to music, and am not sure I would call myself audiophile. By this I mean I have taken a number of crazy expensive cables home over the years to try and have never noticed any improvement in performance but then with S.T i7 was an in your face improvement. Has anyone had any luck using a MicroRendu as an UPnP Bridge on Phantom with Dialog? The MicroRendu can't find the Dialog renderer, and I hope someone has succeeded and could share some tips.

For the microRendu to work it first needs to "see" your DAC, although this can work with other devices, for example my mR will "see" my Mutec MC3+USB.

I would suggest that you post a question on "Audiophile Style".  Sonore have a sponsored area on the site, and are usually very helpful with answering questions and solving issues.

Thanks, will try over there. The UPnP Bridge mode emulates a Squeeze lite, no DAC involved. It's now kind working after reinstalling the firmware on the MicroRendu. 45 seconds of music and then silence.
