Hmmmm, five days with no follow-up. I must have offended or anaesthetized the entire DC community. So it falls to me to follow up my own post. I guess this becomes #2 in the mini-series of the live-and-recorded concept.
Some years ago (too many, to be exact) I saw Peter Murphy play at a nifty club here in Vancouver. It was a trio set up; Peter singing, Peter DeStephano on guitar, and Hugh Marsh on Violin; some electronic backing tracks prerecorded as well. Yes, Mr Murphy ex of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and Dali's Car.
It was a great show; there was a fragile, imperfect, almost tenuous feel to the peformance, which sort of surprises one in the world of dark, moody rock. With so little instrumental support, the vocal lines really had to carry a great deal of weight, and carry the tunes. The album Just For Love was recorded as part of this tour. Wonderful sparse, melodic and finely crafted re-imaginings of some of his solo works. I loved it live, I love it on the disc, and I recommend it to you. Not for the 'high quality' of the recording, but for the real, this-is-what-it-sounds-like quality. With this one, you're standing right in front of the stage. Your black trench coat is dirty and your mascara is running....
