I've got one of the very first Phantom Silvers from a few years ago. How can I make this Airplay compatible?

You'll have to buy a new Dialog with Airplay.

I was also curious about compatibility with older models, as the email blast seemed ambiguous (or maybe I was being hopefuly).

The support page on the feature confirms that you need one of the newer models for it to work:

I've used a single Phantom with an Airport Express to get Airplay (the Airport supports Airplay, and has a TOSLink output), though it limits the stream to 16bit/44.1khz.

Yes it is. AirPlay is lossless 44/16 or 48/16 while Bluetooth is lossy.

aptX is also 48kHz / 16bit LPCM, but not lossless.
