MELCO
#1
Thought I'd share with you all the details of an exciting brand new storage product: The MELCO N1 Music Library.

This is essentially an audiophile NAS on steroids, perfectly optimised in every way possible for high res audio. The company behind this is Buffalo.

Check out some of the specs:

- Dedicated LAN port for Player (Streamer) connectivity - optimum data integrity and simple setup.
- Light-piped Ethernet ports - complete electrical isolation totally removing possibility of interference and noise.
- LAN LED off function - ensures the highest possible data integrity.
- Separated power supply circuitry for LAN ports - isolates the LAN function from all electrical disturbances
- Double power supplies - separate power functions for LAN and USB / HDD / System management (*N1Z only)
- Audio-grade ultra-low jitter data clock - eliminates any possibility of data jitter at source
- No PC required for setup and installation - no specialist knowledge needed.
- Specific IP port for Streamer / Player with additional Network port for Control and Ethernet. Simply creates robust network for streaming high resolution music and control even on complex networks.
- Pre-installed media server - no configuration required.
- Supports multiple specialised media servers - currently shipping with Twonky 7 with DSD support.
- Informative OLED front panel display - displays current streaming track data, system status, and setup,
- Simple menu navigation structure and track selection
- Simple front panel on-off switch - just like Hi-Fi.
- 15 seconds only to full power-on.
- 5 seconds to full shut-down
- Safe against unintended power down - no requirement for UPS

The device comes in two versions: the flagship N1Z (£6,200?) and N1A (£1,600).

Speaking to the product manager recently at the HiFi News Show I understand that the cheaper N1A is probably all you will need. The reason that the N1Z is so much more expensive is that (among other things) it features 2 512GB audio-grade SSDs which apparently cost around $1k each to make!

Now wouldn't it be amazing if AIR could be installed on one of these devices?! Tongue

This product has been in Japanese market since early this year and attracted many attentions from audiophiles. Buffalo is currently working on a firmware upgrade which enables this NAS to work as a network player. With the new firmware, the NAS works like Aurender and you can directly connect the USB output of the NAS to Devialet. I listened the beta version with Buffalo NAS/PS Audio DirectStream DAC/CH Precision C1 Pre/CH Precision A1 Power/Vivid Giya3 and liked it.

Hi,
I was at the Bristol show and Chord Cables were using the Melco as the source for their reference system to demonstrate their cables.
They were very impressed and ordered two for their R&D department.
Although the casing and rebadge is very prototype looking the innards are of the highest quality.
I am not sure how it would work with a Devialet via ethernet or USB as not driven by AIR.
Does it require something like an NDX outputting via digital lead devialet?
There is no SPDif output on the Melco.

Guys what are the odds!

Just yesterday I passed by my local dealer here in dubai and there it was the very sane streamer hooked up to a D800 which in turn drives a pair of Wilson Audio Sofia 2 and the sound was absolutely amazing. I just loved every bit of it

The amount of crap I'm reading in at least the first half of the specs are unbelievable.
Turning off the LED for the NIC to increase data integrity? That's like a few years ago people thought you could read the bits on a MODEM laying in the window. Alu hats all over the place.

I just can't believe there are actually people falling for the amount of bullshit sold with that thing.

I would have used more friendly language, but content wise I fully agree.

Personally I'm going to reserve judgement until I hear it in my system.  Smile

In fact at the moment I'm envisioning a totaldac d1 v Nano Transport v Melco challenge! Now that could be fun  Big Grin
