PCM or Bitstream for blu ray
#1
Hi all,

Recently I ''downgraded'' my 2.1 system to a 2.0 system with the phantom golds, while I immensely enjoy the system, I don't know whether PCM or Bitstream is better.

Which setting do you use for movie watching? They're connected with an optical cable.

Thanks,

Hi Cyral. welcome!

Your question does not make sense, or rather the choice in your device is a bit strange... I'd go for PCM if that means LPCM (=Linear Pulse Code Modulation). This is usually the lossless version on disk. Bitstream is not a format as such, it's more a description - a stream of bits... Hopefully the user manual of your device will explain what they mean with 'bitstream'.

Thank you for your quick response.

My blu ray player has the option to choose PCM or Bitstream (DD, DTS)  for the digital audio out. Also my samsung tv has the same options for the digital audio out.

Yes I see, DD and DTS are lossy compressions. DTS is said to have less compression than DD and a little better sound. Good and convenient, but as ghosttipper says - use PCM - whenever it works.
