Devialet Cables?
#1
DEVIALET CABLES

Why doesn't Devialet make Devialet-specific loudspeaker, interconnect, digital and even ethernet cables?

If you look at their philosophies and initiatives and past statements, we have:

A) a unit which, by definition of its multiple facilities, effectively eliminates the need for signal cables between the phono pre-amp and the pre-amp, between the DAC and the pre-amp, and between the pre-amp and the power amp

B) a statement in relation to computer source components that “the best cable is no cable” (namely wifi AIR is better than ethernet AIR) albeit since modified because of wifi vulnerabilities

C) the development of SAM, which optimises a loudspeaker’s activity, at least in the absence of loudspeaker cable*

D) the development of RAM, which optimises a cartridge’s activity, at least in the absence of phono cable*

* or by replicating the cable which Devialet actually uses in their SAM and RAM development work, whatever that might be

So why doesn’t Devialet complete their proposition by offering signal cables?

This has been done by high end manufacturers in the past: I can think of Audio Synthesis (engineer David Heaton) which made dedicated digital, interconnect and loudspeaker cables for their transports, DACs, pre-amps and power amps; and Deltec (later DPA) (engineer Rob Watts, now with Chord) which did the same, including loudspeaker cables with a feedback loop and power cables with power conditioners. Audio Synthesis no longer exists, and whilst Deltec or DPA does it is in reincarnated form with different ownership.

I guess both Naim and Linn do complete cable propositions and then there are companies that specialise in power conditioners and mains cable (Isotek and Shunyata, which also does all signal cables).

But it seems to me that no company has a stronger rationale for doing signal cables than Devialet, even if they wish to avoid getting into the power conditioning and mains cable area. And one might guess that something like a third of their customers might sign up, knowing that they were buying an optimised proposition?

Maybe the reality is that Devialet’s uniqueness would limit Devialet’s cable sales to only Devialet amplifier customers, many of whom would still think about Transparent or Chord or Shunyata or Crystal. So whilst the idea might have logical appeal it might be viewed as a commercial non-starter? It is also fair to say that if you believe that cables are contributory (albeit in a non-contributory way) then the efforts involved by some manufacturers in getting the right cable outcomes seem to be huge (just look at the Shunyata website and research papers) and perhaps economic only if you have appeal to many owners of different manufacturer products and/or your cable/conditioner products have application in areas wider than hifi. This then allows you to produce a range of cables at different price points and broaden your appeal, whereas were there a Devialet signal cable proposition it would involve just five cables.

There are, of course, some companies where the efforts involved in getting the right cable outcomes are probably modest and the mark-up huge ... where comments are best avoided.
