Does the MC really bring significant improvement over MM or is it marginal? Or one would really need higher components to hear the benefits of the MC over the MM?

It's marginal insofar that on most turntables you can swap the cartridge easily. Since the Devialet phonostage can accept MM and MC that's not a problem either. As for taste, that's what you have to find out for yourself.
