Well I have run RoonServer on my Synology NAS without any issues, other than slightly degraded performance when doing a search in the Roon client. However I was using it with a Mac Mini acting as the RoonBridge and USB connection to my D400.
It sounded fine in this setup. I also ran it with a microRendu rather than the Mac Mini and that sounded very very good as well.
However I have since switched to running RoonServer on the Mac Mini with AIR3 and that sounds to my ears as good as the setup with the microRendu.
I never tried it using the USB out on the NAS to the D400.
Also when running RoonServer on my NAS ( Synology 1812+ ) I would get drop outs when sending DSD128 files ( which were down converted by Roon to feed the D400 ). That is probably an edge case for you, sorry I don't have the exact information you are seeking.
