It's complicated that's for sure! Fully understanding how code humans write turns into code directly used by the CPU, and then how the CPU itself works (especially a modern one) right down to the physical atomic level is probably a lifetimes study. I only touched on it indirectly, and don't know it as well as I used to, but would suggest a bit of Wikipedia and google and branch out from there.
Perhaps someone here is that expert and can explain it succinctly from top to bottom. I'd be interested too.
